Default car is drinking to much fuel??

Well, the camaro has always got bad gas mileage compared to others (around 24mpg babying it everywhere in 6th gear is the best it's ever gotten ---that was interstate miles).

The only mods done to it is exhaust (Borla 3" adjustable catback with stock Y-pipe, Slp hi-flows, and stock manifolds), the car came stock with 342rear-end.

Today I left for school at about half a tank of gas (Is about a 40mile drive to school from my house) and it had gulped 1/4 a tank, I was babying the car & also driving it on the interstate. Well I get home and now it's about a millimeter away from empty, also interstate driving and babying it not going over 70 and revving about 1200-1400rpms.

At first I thought maybe it's an injector stuck open, but the car doesn't smell like gasoline and it's not dumping fuel out the exhaust...

About right now the car has gone 286 miles on a 16.5 gallon tank..

Any ideas on what the hell is going on?

might possibly be a bad o2 sensor. get those checked out and also is it throwing any codes? but 286 doesn't sound all that bad alot of people on here dont get much more than that, most get less than that.

Well I know the 02's are fubar, because the Cat's are gutted, so the SES light is on. But 286 seems to be aweful for a basically stock camaro...

I have a friend with longtubes an ORY, and some other boltons puttin out about 400at the wheels getting 28mpg on his 01 T/a...

How would having a bad 02 sensor cause my car to gulp gas like this?

O2 sensors tell how much fuel should be injected into the motor, with your O2s like they are your car is gonna run rich b/c of the Air Fuel ratio, get new O2 sensors and see if that helps. get the 13111 i think are the corvette rear O2s everyone likes.

It's because you're doing 24mph in SIXTH GEAR! Try babying it at 25mph in 3rd or 4th. You're putting the engine under a huge load by driving around in such a low gear. What is 6th anyways? .53 or .73? My friend always puts his Vette in 6th when doing 40 and stuff, so I told him once to put it in 5th, he'll get better gas mileage. Well his car has the thing that tells you, and whataya know! It got better real-time and avg

Sorry 24mph was a typo, mean't to be 24mpg. I usually shift to 6th at about 55.

Damn, I wish I got 286 per tank. I rarely get over 200.

Heh, this is just a big change for me, i've gone from getting about 410miles off a tank babying the car, and the mileage has slowly been getting worse over the last weeks and now it's almost half of what it used to be. I do believe it is a combination of 02 sensors, weather, and gas quality.

City/Highway (around Columbus, OH), I get about 15-19 mpg. I fill up at about 180 miles (usually 10.5 to 11.8 gallons, give or take). On a road trip, I've seen 29.5 mpg from Columbus to Morgantown, WV (at 80 mph with two people in it and luggage). The city mileage isn't good, but open interstate cruising does ok. Also, the 2nd half of the gas gauge on these cars goes really quickly. It takes me 50 miles to get down to the full mark, (1/8"), 50 more to just above 1/2 tank and in another 50 miles I'm under the 1/4 mark. If I leave for work at about a needles width above 1/4 tank, I can barely get back home (10 miles each way, in light traffic) before it's showing empty.

Also, a clogged fuel filter will cause you to get better mileage, not worse. It restricts the fuel flow, the car goes lean, but the mileage improves.

On a trip I got 24,25.5, and 27.5 mpg. 27.5 being the best obviously, this was 150+ miles of highway at 70-80 in 6th.

He is probably saying that with a 16.5 gallon tank and 24 miles to the gallon he would get 410 miles if he ran it till it was empty. 16.5x24= is about 396.
