Default Oil question?

Hey everyone...just a couple quick questions about oil...what type of oil do our ls1's specifically call for? (5w-30, etc.)...and also right now I'm running Mobil 1 fully synthetic 10W-30...does this sound like a good oil to be running weight wise, etc.? Thanks again everyone for all the helpful tips on ls1tech...I know I can always look to this site for any questions that arise...thanks everyone!

Also I hope this is the right forum...sorry if it's not

No reason to run a 10w oil unless you have a leak problem that you just can't fix. Factory recommends 5w30 and that's what plenty of people use but there are a ton that swear by German Castrol 0w30. I think I'm going to try to get some of that but apparently it's getting tougher and tougher to find.

I'm running Mobil 1 5w30 now and don't plan to switch unless I can find GC 0w30.

Also, do a search. You will find thousands of posts on this subject.

For what it's worth I only have about 3,500 on the 10w-30 Mobil 1 that's in my car now and intend on changing it back over to 5w-30 sometime this weekend or as soon as the weather permits...just wanting to make sure there's no harm done which I'm almost positive there isn't...thanks again everyone

No problem with it of course. There's just no reason to run a 10w oil.

I have ran Mobile 1 5w-30 since I bought my car new. No problems at all. By running a thicker oil you can sacrafice gas mileage because of the thicker oil.

I've been running RP 5-30 have not had a single problem,2002 running RP 5-30 from first oil change. Because car just turned 112,000 miles I changed to RP 10-30, but don't know why as I've been really happy with 5-30. Guess I was just thinking of all those miles.

If you look in your owner's manual you'll see that GM recommends 5w-30 or 10w-30.

0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30, 5w-40, 0w-40, they all work just fine in the stock LS1. Any differences will only be in fractions and important to people who like to pick nits.

Get yourself educated on oil and you will thank yourself later. What's most important is to change your oil regularly (3k to 5k miles) and use an oil generally recognized as a quality, name brand oil.

At extra cost, you could get your used oil analzyed for wear and problems that may be developing. Blackstone Labs is a good place.

Happy motoring.
