Default How easy is it to change my valve cover gaskets?

See the title... The dealer wanted to charge me 355 bucks.

Any instructions? I've searched and search isn't working for me right now.

EDIT: Am I going to have to take off the intake manifold???

It's easy, helped a friend remove his on a 2K. Disconnected battery, removed coil packs, then valve covers. And no need to remove the intake.

Edit: Should note he had !AIR and !EGR. Also coil packs are mounted different if you have a '98.

Do I need any sealants or anything? I've never done this before... RTV? Silicone?

It's a 2000, and I still have AIR and EGR.

well at least for the valve cover portion of the job. if you are disconnecting the egr and air fittings on the manifold you'll probably need those gaskets as well. Unless you want to try to do your best to seal them back off with that copper colored rtv gasket sealer. The copper colored stuff is for high heat parts.

So will I have to take off the AIR/EGR systems to do this? If my car wasn't at the dealership right now, I'd go look at it myself...

Don't think you have to, might make it easier tough. Not sure on complete EGR removal, just loosen and get it out of the way if need be? The gaskets for the air tubes are cheap if you want them on hand - GM PN 12553617. I bought some just in case before a plug change - been unbolted twice on the passenger side and haven't used one yet. Bet there's a link on here somewhere about painting valve covers that'll help you too.

Good idea... didn't think about painting valve covers for instructions!

We used stock GM valve cover gaskets from the dealer - thought about trying to reuse the old ones but they were a little distorted. There's a valve cover painting writeup at installuniversity.com, but it's for a '98 and might be a little different.

Are the valve cover gaskets from GM decent? I feel like I'd rather upgrade if Mr. Gasket/Fel-Pro are better quality.

I'm buying the Fel-Pro PermaDry gaskets... I read another thread that said they were the best. Thanks for all the help everyone!
