Default Coolant Leak From Water Pump...Any Ideas?

I was going to connect the sending unit for my oil pressure gauge the other day...and I found a leak comming from somewhere around my water pump....any ideas before I just have to take off the water pump to figure it out? Is it possibly a seal or the pump itself? Please let me know...

Either way, the pump has to come off. I don't see why the gaskets would ever just start leaking, it must be the pump.

I'd say your pump is going out, replace it if you are taking it off anyways

it's dexcool. dexcool has been proven to eat the rubber seals in our water pump with age. problem is, when air gets into the system or when it gets old, it rots the gaskets. it happened to me after 30,000 miles. if you want to run dexcool, don't use their 5 year/150,000 mile life figure. it's BS. change it every other year just like green coolant.

if your gasket is bad, don't be surprised if the water pump is on its way out. time for a new one IMO. that's what i did.

Oh no, I was talking about the "gaskets", the metal gaskets for the coolant passages. They should last forever. If its is the "seals in the pump" than the pump has to come off either way. I said "gaskets" because he said he didn't know if it was the poump itself or "coming from somewhere around the pump", which would be the gaskets.

His pump is most likely just shot. I've been lucky, mine is original at 9 years this month.

Yup. And get new gaskets from the dealer, they're very cheap. IIRC under $15.00.

Yeah so like i have noticed a trend. Almost all F-bodys and C/k trucks seem to water pump failures fail around the same time frame. I am kinda amazed that some water pumps last so long, while others not so much. I did the gm service tech thing and seen alot diffrent cars. How it worked where i worked is. Pretty much once you work on a car every timed it comes in back to the shop for anything it was your job. So naturally i seen alot of cars more than once. Its amazing some of the stuff i have seen related to dexcool.

oh on that note i use the green stuff.

I always go genuine GM from my dealer when possible. Plus, I get any GM part from my dealer at almost cost. My buddy is the parts manager.

Well, my water pump is original and 9 years old. I left the factory fill up of Dexcool in there for 4 years, than when I had my 436ci engine put in I went water only and a bottle of Water Wetter. Had that mixture for the past 5 years.

So really, it's just hit or miss, it has nothing to do with the coolant of choice.

Just like my factory 4L60E tranny. Same time I had my 436 installed I had an FLP tranny installed. I sold my 50,000 mile factory stock 4L60E to a friend, he did 100 passes on it with an 11 second nitrous car and it's still fine. Some are good, some suck.

Yeah...do not leave the dexcool in there for that 5yrs BS...I have had several techs tell me that that only works under ideal situations like if the car is hardly ever driven...But on a driven car, change it like always.

$3.49. it's a genuine GM part. why pay $15 from a dealer when you can get both for $7?

i was mistaken. it's $0.99 for the 98 model year ONLY. i didn't realize they used different water pump seals...even with your brother's discount, it's hard to beat that price.
