LS1 Water Pump & T-Stat
I got the part number from here for the water pump and its *89018053. But GM Parts Direct wants to charge me $40 on shipping, so im just going to pick one up at Advance Auto Parts. My question is do the water pumps come with the T-Stat and Inlet, or is that something i need to go pick up at a dealer? I was considering a cooler T-Stat, but when i dynoed my car i can't remember if the tuner lowered the fans. So just to be safe i want to go with the factory t-stat, should i just go pick one up from the dealer.
Thanks

If you don't want a 160, just reuse the one you have....as far as I know only the GM pumps are different and your current one won't fit. I could have used my old one on my new one from Auto Zone.

The only thing that a (even tuned for fans) 160 will do negatively is get slightly worse gas mileage.
But even this is disputed by some who claim this will only happen in cold climes in winter.

SSNISTR: Im guessing you picked up the Duralast pump that their site shows for 133.99?
So i can pick up the 160 t-stat from autozone and run it, even though im not sure if my fans have been lowered to accomodate it? I was considering picking up the pump at advance, and the t-stat from the dealer. But if you guys say i can use the 160 from a local auto parts i might take that route.

**Actually i just went through the Autozone site, and they have a 187* t-stat that comes with the seal and the housing. I might just pick that on up since im not sure if the tuner lowered my fan temp. I believe the factory t-stats run at 195* or something like that, my car should have no problem running the 187* correct? Thanks

Everything in the motor is speced to run at temp. When you build a good motor they hone it [hopefully] at temp.
Do two dyno pulls. One cold and one hot and see what the difference is. Our cars were engineered to operate at 90 degrees.

Say what you want. A warmed up engine makes more power.

Well i took the car apart on friday, and went to Autozone to pick up the water pump and t-stat. Well Autozone had the water pump, but they didn't have the thermostat in stock. Here are some of the part numbers:
Duralast Water Pump - EWP9189 - $133.99
Valucraft Thermostat 160* - 37960 - $31.99
Felpro Water Pump Gasket - 35635 - $9.99
**I didn't buy the water pump gasket, since the water pump came with its own. Im not sure how good in quality they are compared to the Felpro. But they didn't look/feel crappy, so i used the ones that came with the pump and saved $10.**
I had taken the water pump off 2 years ago when i installed my cam, so i already knew what to do. But for anyone not sure, just follow the instructions on LS1HowTo.com and go to the cam swap and go down to where they explain how to take off the water pump. For the thermostat just check out the install guide on installuniversity.com. Here are also some torque specs you will need to follow:
Water Pump - 1st pass 11ft. Lbs. & 2nd pass 22 ft. Lbs.
Thermostat - 7.42ft. Lbs. ** As stated in installuniversity.com **
Tensioner - 37ft. Lbs
When i finally finished everything and fired up the car it was still hot, but much of the sun had already gone down. But i noticed that while idling the temp never got above 194* (it did touch 195* once, but that was for a split second and dropped right after). The lowest it got while idling was touching 181*, but most of the time it would sit down to about 183* then go back up. Driving around it hardly ever changed much between 190*-192*. I got the data via my diablo sport, not sure how accurate it is. But im sure its alot more accurate than the factory temp gauge that always sits at 210*.

My local AutoZone has a Mr Gasket 160* LS1 thermostat hanging up with the chrome accesories and that stuff. It's the only LS1 part I've seen there so I did double check. It doesn't come with the housing.

Just go to autozone and ask them for this part #37960
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP82845/v...ductDetail.htm
Thats what i ordered, and installed. I actually drove the car a bit more, even through some occasional traffic in some insanely hot weather. The highest i noticed via the diablo sport was 194*, in the past i had noticed my car running 210*-224*. I hadn't driven my car for 2 weeks so it felt good to take her for a spin again, i almost forgot how loud she was.

Bottom line, running the engine at 160 instead of 180, you WILL make more power. Your combustion temperatures will be lower, allowing more fuel to be input without the fear of detonation.
The main reason they run them hotter is for better emissions. Higher temp, lower CO......
