Default Gauges Going Crazy - Help!

A few days ago, my gauges started to act up.

When I start the car, the tach jumps around, and so does the speedo. They become normal once again at idle. If I revv the car, the speedo goes up to 10mph or so.

I drove the car rather hard the other day, and noticed my tach vs. actual rpm was way off. Once in 4th gear (floored) the speedo was literally jumping around all over the place.

Does anyone know what's going on?

I have a '98 Formula M6.

I have a 1998 Trans Am, and had the same problem, switched out the shift kit and it fixed it for about six months, but it is back again, so I am not sure if that fixed the problem or if it just Band-Aided the problem. I always felt that it was an electrical problem. I know it is frustrating, good luck.

this usually happens when your battery is about dead or on its way out. Have you noticed your car turning over slower than usual?

One more for it being a dead or dying battery.

Either bad voltage(dying battery), or a bad connection from the battery on down.

Hm. The car turns over the same as always. I have a few more batteries laying around here...I'll give them a try.

Thanks for the help!

My Buddy Had The Same Problem With His Tach Jumping Around. His Car Also Ended Up Dead The Next Morning. He Replaced His Battery And Worked Fine For A Couple Of Days. Next Morning It Happened All Over Again. It Turned Out To Be The Alternator That Was Going Out And Not Providing Enough Power To Interior Components. Hope It Helps Any.

Either a bad battery or a ground wire issue on the back of the driver side head?
