Default Rear out of 3rd Gen???

I have my stock rear and I'm in college so moneys kinda tight
would love to do a cam/ heads but need a 12 bolt before i can do anything big

my buddy told me that he has a 10 bolt out of a 3rd gen that i can have.. eaton posi and 3.73s but it has drum brakes still

how hard would it be to swap it out for my stock 10 bolt and switch over the brakes? will it bolt right up?

The 3rd gen rear end is two inches shorter then the 4th gen rear end. Also it is just as weak, if not weaker then the 4th gen. If your 10-bolt is busted, then that will be a fine temporary replacment. If your 10-bolt is still good, don't waste your time.

idk if its built up at all, but it has and eaton and 3.73s even if it goes ill have a good rear in my backyard... even if it only lasts a year itll be worth while--> depending on if itll bolt right up and how hard it would be to swap the brakes

Higher gears will make it break quicker.

Just keep what you have, you can take his and keep it in the backyard just in case, but swapping it in will offer you no benefits.

Btw, wrong section.

naturally, but everything ive heard is that 3.73s stand up nicely in 10 bolts, 4.10s blow em up fairly quickly-- ive heard 3.73s in stock 10bolts last several years in 11second DDers

that would be considered lower gears, and should not matter. as far as the rear goes if it is 2 in shorter, there may be modifications needed for it to work. which may cost more than its worth.

Just because the gears might hold up does not mean the axels will. I broke 3 third gen rear ends with a 300 HP 305 don’t make the mistake and assume you are the only one to try this if your stock rear is fine now don’t beat on it.

I spent a lot of cash that i did not want to when I was in college on rear ends but it all came back to do it right the first time! If you want to play hard you are going to pay the $$$$$$$$$

what year thirdgen? pre-'90 axles will be 26 spline which will already make it much weaker than the 28 spline '90+ axles. Also, you could use wheel spacers but that will already add a couple hundred dollars to the swap.

it will bolt right in, and the brakes are a pretty easy swap. but like said if its prior to 89 it has the weaker 26 spline setup. you can get like two inch spacers or run deeper wheels with less backspacing. but either way, m6 cars dont like 10 bolts, even tho im still running one. haha

would i be possible to swap my 28 spline axles into the 3rd gen's housing so that way id have the eaton, 3.73s and 28 spline?

better yet swap the eaton and gears into my housing and use my axles so the size will fit nicely

The rear will bolt right up but spacers will be needed.

the rear out of my 84 trans am has 28 spline axels, it is also a disc brake rear. i dont have the car anymore but i still have the rear. its upgraded with an auburn rear center section. i should have also uprgraded the axels but i didnt, i was being kinda cheap. i had it rebuilt for under a grand, a new 12 or 9 bolt over $2,500.00. of course thats including brakes and everything but it was still cheaper to have it rebuilt. if you plan on putting more power to the ground, save up for the right piece.

Rear disk did come on 84 Z's. Mine had them. I think they came on the H.O. cars (190hp) Now what I dont know is what spline axles it had.

just seached CZ28 and seems like 26 and 28 spline axles are jsut as strong as one-another, but 28s jsut has a tigher fit at 0 backlash... girdle and should be good for mid 12s?
