Question Replaced alternator.... now belt giving me a problem

I replaced the alternator today and as soon as I start the car, it seems the belt hops and half the belt pops off the idler pulley and the steering pump pulley. The belt is on correctly and not sure what is going on. The belt is about 2 1/2 maybe 3 years old. No cracks...

I did spray engine degreaser on the engine today before I took off the belt and I think I got a little bit on the belt I noticed when I took it off to do the alternator so I cleaned the whole belt with a rag.

Any ideas/help?

Check the pulley on the new alternator and compare it to the old one. I would also check the belt tensioner.

sounds like you have pullies that are missaligned. Try and get a good look at them and make sure they are all lined up with eachother.

More than 50% of the altenators Ive replaced Ive had to swap over the old pulley to the new one. Compare the sizes of the two.

well I checked the pulleys on the alternator and they are the same size. I changed the tensioner puller and now the belts stay on the power steering pump, and tension pulley. It only comes off the small pulley that is bottom left of the steering pump..

Had the small pulley on the belt tensioner bracket. Pulley was in the wrong bracket. I'm a rookie when it comes to working on my car but I'm learning
