Painting LS1 aluminum block - primer?
I'm looking to be doing an LS1-4L60E swap into my already modded up 82 Corvette. I'll document as much as I can on this website along with maybe Digital Corvettes and the CF.
I have a question on the materials used for painting the aluminum block. I tried searching for this, but can only find info on the composite intake painting and not the block.
I'd like to use the Duplicolor engine enamels and have used them before, but want to know for aluminum blocks, if the primer is recommended or not for this. Anyone with experience with these paints on aluminum?
Brent.

So far so good here. I used duplicolor 500 degree high heat and their matching primer and clear.

is 500 degree paint enough for an engine block? i know there is vht flameproof that is 1500 degrees and requires no primer.
but i do use quite a bit of duplicolor engine enamel with ceramic for all my under the hood stuff and have had great results.

Sorry but an engine block doesnt get 500 degrees. The VHT is a pain in the *** to fully cure it as it needs to be baked and/or have the car run for a certain amount of time. I would consider vht for headers or something of that nature but not a block.

Did you use the self etching primer or the engine high heat primer?
The Duplicolor can for engine enamel says to use high heat engine DE 1612 Gray Engine Primer.

This is the paint I used. The metal specks I used on the intake, TB, valve covers, and coil packs. I started using the wheel clear bc it seemed to come out more clear and less milky, and the 500 degree clear didnt seem to have a rattle ball in it. The silver 500 degree I used on the block, trans, water pump, alt, etc, etc.
