Default Modding Fipk intake

I was wondering is anyone has cut the base plate of the intake so that is gets airflow from below. Where there any gains?

why would you do this? mho there would be no concentrated air going to motor as if there was a lid and that portion cut out.....waste of time

I went ahead and did the mod. I wasn't trying to make a ram air setup I was just trying to give the filter more cold air to breath from when the hoods closed. Ill try and get pics up today. I think its gonna work good.

It may be a waste of time. But I would imagine some amount of cold air will be forced up by the front chin spoiler and through the hole into my filter but who knows. I didn't cost me anything but time so either way doesn't matter.

I did the exact same thing, I cut a hole about 4" wide and 14" long in the radiator support right under the FIPK filter. It's basically the same thing as the " free ram air mod " done with a lid. I put a very coarse screen in it to filter any junk that could come from the road. I figure anything to get more air flowing to the filter won't hurt.

I'm making a heat shield for mine to try and control the air into the filter through my ram air hood. Picking it up today from the painter.

Yes except mine didn't turn out looking as good as that. Also the whole I cut was directly under the filter.

Highly contest that remark.

It's a well made product that works. It's just as good as others which don't use a ram-air inlet.

Why is it in general a waste of time? Its as good as the lid setup and it came on the car so I don't see why its a waste trying to make the most of it? This site gets really old sometimes people adding stupid comments yet not supporting what they say or adding anything at all useful to the topic.

do a search, you will find plenty of threads dealing with the FIPK. it draws under hood HOT air. there is a reason you see the FIPK on very few F-bodies. a good lid and a ram air setup is far superior to the K&N with the bottom cut out of it.

i had the FIPK on my car when i bought it. i took it off shortly after a base line dyno, and installed an SLP lid and did the FRA and i picked up 3 hp and 6 TQ across the board pretty much.

Yes I have proof...I measured the air temperature around the intake and IAT from the PCM before and after installing the K&N with the custom cutouts. After yielded air temps = to ambient and lower IAT as well.

FYI, any car, on any dyno could vary 3-5hp between pulls with or without a change from one intake to another.

That's the truth and all the proof needed.

Don't believe all the "experts" that lurk on forums.

Ive watched my IAT temps with my fipk because Ive read the same BS. What I found was the intake temp did go up when sitting at a stoplight but dropped almost instantly after starting to move. This was without the hole cut in the bottom so IMO the heat soak caused by the fipk is a myth.

As for why you hardly ever see them on f-bodys is simple there 380 bucks VS a lid which is 100

i did it to mines cut a hole right across and also debalffed my ws6 hood at the same time so there is very little hot air actually making it to the fliter
