Strange question, but when do you know you NEED a catch can? I've never had to add oil between oil changes. My throttle body and intake are a little wet, but that could be from when I had N2O on the car years ago.

The theory is that frequent use of wide open throttle can overwhelm the PCV system that is adequate for conservative driving. When that occurs excess oil can accumulate in the intake and lead to a variety of bad side effects. The website for Elite Engineering has a good discussion of these. (They sell catch cans, that are pretty good, but a bit pricey).

If you want to check to see if you really need one - you could pull the throttle body and run a swab of some sort inside your intake to see if the amount of oil accumulation (if any) causes you concern.

(I have an oil catch can that yields a couple ounces every 1k miles, but I never seem to need any oll. I think the extra fluid is condensation or fuel dilution, but I do not know.)

We sell both the RX Performance (RevXtreme) and Elite Engineering catch cans. Not all catch cans are made the same way. You get what you pay for. we've seen some lower cost ones that do the job "some what" but not as effective.

If anyone has further questions shoot us an e-mail. Thanks.

Cool thanks for the info. I've been reading a lot about removing the PCV but have not run across anything that really states when you need one.
