How do you know when you need a catch can setup?

I agree with all the above posts.
Most would say you need a Catch Can the moment you purchase an LSx based ride.
You obviously have some amount of oil consumption going on. I would follow RARON455's advice and pull off your TB and take a look inside your Intake. If you find oil in there, I'd say you've at least found where some of your missing 1/2 Qt is going and, if it were my car, I'd start looking for a Catch Can. Good luck.

I have both. Bought the catch can first...then learned about the valley cover. My reasoning was this, or thus...the valley cover helps relieve the pressure which drives the oil out of the crankcase. Then, the catch can acts to capture the residuals. I mounted my can a bit away from the engine, the theory being that a cooler catch can would assist in allowing any oil to condense within the can. The engine doesn't have enough use yet for me to know how well this works.

Hopefully this doesn't sound like that dumb of a question, do you have to empty the catch can out periodically or does it feed the oil back to the motor after it reaches a certain volume? I'm new to the whole catch can and pcv setup since I just bought an LS1.
Also does it help to add a passenger valve cover breather to help with the catch can?
I don't mean to hijack the thread, just thought this was a good place to ask these questions.

OK, so everything i read says that catch cans are something you only really need in high hp applications and that seeing high crankcase pressure (which causes the oil to find it's way through the pcv system) is likely a symptom of a problem in your regular stock engines. So assuming this is not normal for Ls1 engines (lets pretend), what sort of problems could cause excessive oil getting through the pcv system ?
I dont doubt a catch can would benefit even a properly running engine, but it would be good to rule out it being a symptom of a problem first, rather than just blindly attributing it to normal operation.

I have a 2005 CTS-V LS6, presumably with the newer style valley cover. I also have an Elite Engineering Oil Catch Can that accumulates a significant amount of oil/fluid - more than an once per 1K Miles. I do a lot of cold starts in a high humidity environment, which may be a factor.

so i'm sure this is my problem but I have a ton of crappy oil residue in the intake. Whats the best way to clean this so I know my catch can is working. I plan on getting one with the weather gets nicer. Seafoam? take the intake off? If i take the intake off what if any cleanning solution would i need to use?
