Best way to hold Y pipe onto headers without welding
So i FINALLY got my car running except today when i was driving i shifted into 6th and my Y pipe fell off, was only hanging on by the hanger. It completely fell out of the headers, and i had my band clamps on there as tight as i could possibly get them. I really really don't want to have them welded, and i don't think these clamps i have now are going to hold them on as i really couldn't get them any tighter. What do you guys suggest?

We typically run band clamps and have no issues. We use a little different style clamp though. Ours is a stepped clamp to make sure it clamps securely to both the header and the expanded side of the y-pipe that is sliding onto the header. This not only clamps better to both diameter pipes but helps seal up any exhaust leaks.

This one time, at Band Clamp... Sorry had to do it.
The FLP LTH came with a monster clamp. We put exhaust tape down first, then the clamps. Never and issue (probably until I start it now)

use the lap band clamp like TSP suggested. You can clamp it with a standard exhaust clamp until it seals, but it makes it difficult to get off later. Invest in a pair of the right clamps.

I used the dynomax/walker brand lap joint band clamps for my y-pipe to header connection. i then used a 3 inch v-band clamp for the outlet to i-pipe connection.
no leaks.
...if i was made of money, i'd use all v-band clamps.

You can get them at Advance auto parts as well.

I ended up just going to a shop and having them use the impact on the clamps i have and welded on a dynomax bullet for me. Don't you guys think 100$ is a bit excessive for a bolting on a Y pipe and welding a muffler/turndown in?

the 100 didn't include any parts. there is a little hanger behind the turndown in my pic so you can't see it. I got raped but i just wanted the **** on. I drove it yesterday and got it as tight as i could with my ratchet and the Y pipe straight up fell off.
Honestly, i'm not sure if i like the sound. It sounds like i have exhaust leaks everywhere. I don't really get how, because the Y is pushed like 2inches into the header and everything else is welded on. There is a tick tick tick sound that i hear especially at idle, coming from what it sounds like the underneath of the car. It also sounds really "airy" too, especially when im taking off at low RPMs. Does anyone know what i'm talking about?
From about 2500-3500 RPMs it just sounds like total ****, but once the RPMS climb it definitely sounds better.

I gave up after one of my bands bottomed out going into a steep driveway -- welded the two together and then wrapped the seal with exhaust tape...problem solved. One disclaimer -- the next time the headers and y-pipe need to come off of the car, they will be replaced with a 1 7/8" header and new ORY (so there wasn't much downside to the permanent nature of the welding option).
