Default Cam help first time here

Hey camaro riders I have a 2002 camaro z28 with headers and y pipe that all... I'm trying to put a cam but my car has no type of other performance in it. Would a cam be a good start. My car has 111xxx miles on it.

The 2002's got the ls6 intake manifold from GM, and with the full exhaust a cam would be the next place to go. You can also do a Lid and a ram air if you don't have one yet.
You'll also have to upgrade your push rods, valve springs, and a ls2 timing chain is always a good idea with a cam swap.

This is a good, mild mannered cam. http://www.texas-speed.com/p-1148-te...-camshaft.aspx

That 228R, which is a great cam, might be a bit of a struggle with an A4 unless you have a looser-than-stock converter. You may need to go down to a 224 or a Thunder Racing 220/220 to retain the stock converter. I would suggest forgetting about the cowl hood and spending that money on a converter at the same time you do your cam.

If you keep it an auto you will need a stall converter for the cam. A cam is a great investment, but there are many parts that go along with it(oil pump, timing set, push rods, valve springs). IMO you should do all the possible bolt-on upgrades first, look into getting the 10 bolt replaced and upgrade your suspension. A cammed LS1 car puts down serious power and will need to get it to the ground.

^^With 111K on it I am with you on the timing set, though I'd stick with the GM piece (made by Cloyes for Chevrolet). With a mild cam (like .550 lift or less) you could certainly stick with the stock springs and pushrods if you want to keep the valve covers on, but if you're planning on having the car for awhile I'd replace the springs.

It depends on the cam you choose. Figure out which cam you want, then go from there. Some will require you to get new springs, pushrods and stall etc. and others won't. Figure out a budget.

I know you're new around here, so just try to read and learn some things about your engine and car in general. It'll help you bunches and bunches.

Yea. All 2001 - 2002 Z28's and TA's came with the LS6 intake.

Ask questions and read, you will learn a lot.

Set yourself a budget for your build and expect to exceed it. It'll be a good starting point for part combinations.

Welcome to LS1 Tech.

def do the cam mod! just got finished doing a comp cam 220r swap with pac racing valves and a set of spring from TSP with pacesetter lt's and didnt have to install a converter yet it still has a nice lobe to it. He also did a lower lsa to give it a lil rougher idle but nothing that you can drastically notice unless youve built a number of these engines.
its also about a full day or two worth of work depending on if you work straight through lunch and no breaks. really not that hard man
