Default ORY I-pipe muffler location

I'm going to install a magnaflow 14419 muffler in my I-pipe to reduce rasp. I currently have Kooks 1 7/8s with a Kooks ORY and Corsa catback.

Should I locate the magnaflow closer or farther away from the y-pipe?

Also, the Kooks Y exit reduces down to a 2.625 I.D for about a 3 inch length, should I cut this off to increase flow?

Thanks in advance..

I'm looking at this exact muffler as well to replace my LM 1. I'll be curious to see how it works for you

I'll try and dig up some old pictures. My Camaro originally came with a loudmouth installed and swapped out the LM1 resonator for the magnaflow. It was a direct replacement

Here's two pictures a couple days after purchase. Took car into work and grabbed some underbay pics

Like I said my magnaflow is in the exact same spot but welded in.

Here is a picture with the magnaflow

Hopefully this helps with your placement.

Come on exhaust guru's.

The muffler will fit perfectly over the 3" dia of the kooks Y. That's why I was asking about cutting off the reduced dia end of the Y to increase flow in this area. I do hate cutting up an expensive y that I may sell if I go to true duals someday.

Thanks man. Did that get rid of the drone or were you just looking to quiet the exhaust.

A little bit of both. I loved the sound of stock with LM1 but I knew I was going to be modding it eventually.

I took away the drone (but some is still there, but not much obviously because its a bullet), and I actually wanted a "tone" to the exhaust. I love the way my Z28 sounds now. It quieted it down some, but defiantly sounds alot better. I have my 4 year old sitting in the back and the sound does not bug him one bit.

I do alot of highway driving in the spring/summer with the Z and I don't even up getting out of the camaro with a headache or anything. It's actually 'tolerable' sorta speaking, to the point where it does not annoy you.

So when you did the swap did you have your long tubes already on?

Run it right off the Y-pipe exit.

Yes, cut off small diameter section!

Get a flowmaster 3/3-4" merge and get a 4" bullet muff right behind it.

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully the magnaflow has clearance to the floorpan in that area. I'll have to mount it and see.

Take a look in one of my old threads and see if the pics help you at all. My internet out here on the rig is SLOW, otherwise I'd post them myself.

You shouldn't have any clearance issues with that muffler.

Negative. One of the first mods I did was swap out the LM1 to magnaflow. Longtubes came the following year.

Thanks man. I wish someone could tell me which area is better and why; close to the y exit or furthest back on the I-pipe.

In all honesty there is no "better" so to speak. Just pick the spot that tucks the best.

No such thing as which area is better. If you have clearance. Weld it ... Why not just put it in the general location where bullets usually go (if you have a Y speaking)
