Default 20-second Defroster?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but... My rear window defroster is malfunctioning. When I hit the button on my 99 TA, it lights and stays lit for about 20 seconds, then goes out. The rear window defroster seems to work for that short period, and won't come back on for a few minutes, and then repeats. Seems like it may be like the circuit that people have trouble with on the window motors that heats up. Anyone have any fix ideas?

Try changing the DEFOG/SEATS circuit breaker (located in fuse panel at far LHS of dash).

I just put a fuse in mine to fix the problem. It works like a charm!

Weird, mine does this, but it stays on for probably a minute. I always thought it was a safety thing, not letting it run for too long. how long should the rear defroster run for?

Same problem here. Usually stays on for about a minute too then shuts off.

So I replaced the 30A fuse this afternoon and ran the defroster for a while. Seemed to run longer, I haven't had a chance to try it with actual frost yet. I'll update when I get a chance to see how it works.

Yea mine would stay on for 25 seconds then the circuit breaker would overheat and kill both my rear defroster and power seats. After I replaced it with a 30a fuse the problem with that stopped for good. Hope it works for you guys like it worked for me

Well, it worked one day, now it won't even come on at all. Back to the store for another fuse.

That's why you need a new circuit breaker instead of a fuse.

I used a circuit breaker, may try to put the old one back in. I wonder if my seat control harness may be wet or shorted? I am using aftermarket seats.

I also used new circuit breakers and they didn't work... The fuse works great... I've been using the fuse for over a year now.

I have had the defroster problem for a few years now but living in Florida it isnt a big deal. However i needed it Monday as we had a 30 degree morning here in Orlando(current temp of 85) and my seats quit working. I was so pissed I could have ripped the steering wheel off. A minute later the seats started working.

Glad I found this post.

Yep that's Because the power seats and rear defroster are on the same circuit

With the mornings getting a bit warmer, there are less opportunities to test the defroster. After replacing the breaker with another breaker and blowing that, I tried kyleholt11's advice and grabbed a 30A fuse. The result has been perfect performance on the three mornings I have tried.
