Header choice for 500 rwhp Build??
Trying to decide on a header upgrade for the ride in my sig. Right now I have Dynatech 1 3/4 long tubes which were pretty much the best you could get when I bought them a long time ago.
Looking at getting some kooks from Maryland Speed. Do I go 1 7/8 , 2", 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8 or 1 7/8 to 2" stepped???? I figure with the merge collectors, velocity spike and larger tubes I should gain over te dynatechs.
Exhaust will be a dual 3" setup with x pipe and bullets

Good thread on stepped headers....I was looking into them but wasn't quite sold on the idea. Not a lot of info on 2" headers, I know the LS3's like them but not sure if they would have the same gains on an LS1.

I would look into ARH. I just bought a set of 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8. FYI you will not find these on their website. just give them a call and they can give you all the info you need to make a decision on going stepped or not and primary size.

whichever 1 7/8 headers from ARH or Kooks you can get the cheapest. I called Maryland Speed and they gave me a sweet price on Kooks. Im going 383 and getting rid of my 1 3/4 and going with 1 7/8.

Keep this in mind:
I swapped from 1 5/8" headers to TSP 1 7/8", yes, 1/4" difference in primary diameter.
Went from 414/391 to a whopping 422/393
$500 gained me 8hp, and 2tq.
Just some food for thought....

This technically all depends on what you want to spend, as stated above.
If you REALLY wanted a badassed header for your specific application, you'd get ahold of somebody that builds high end race headers for a living (i.e thousands of dollars), and they would build you a custom set of one off, specific size and length stepped headers for your runner lengths, and horsepower level.
But as Mighty W stated, its sometimes not worth the money to gain 5hp.
with THAT said... there are engines with aftermarket longtubes that get changed to a custom design header gain over 40 horsepower.
bolt on, single primary size headers are hardly "performance"
custom stepped headers make big power.

It really depends on your setup...I gained 20 rwhp 15 rwtq switching to 1 7/8" headers on the same dyno.
I already had H/C ported / port matched FAST 92 and Kooks TD's. Not saying that's the norm, but the 1 3/4" were a big restriction for me.
After I sold the old Kooks and got a touch up tune it cost me $250.

My camshaft has very little overlap (224/230 114) so I wasn't too surprised that the headers didnt pick up that much.
Luckily, i only borrowed them to have an A to B comparison on the same day within an hour of dyno time.
Something with a trex cam would shine with big headers more so than a mediocre camshaft like my xer273

Cam is a 234/242 with .630 lift with 14 degrees overlap. Looking to get as much as possible N/A. Leaning towards the ARH 2". They picked up additional power on LS3 cars over 1 7/8 , but our head design is different. I'll will be replacing my moroso spiral flows with a set of dynomax bullets also. Probably gonna spray it with a 150 shot once Racetronix comes out with the pnp 340 system.
