Harmonic Balancer, chipped front edge????
Some how between the machine shop and my house I chipped the front edge of the harmonic balancer. It's on me he painted it all, and there's no paint in the problem area!
So what to do?.... The pic doesn't really show that the whole front edge broke its about 3/8's long. Can I grind it's smooth, or is it now junk? It appears to be some type of pot metal?

Not an expert on this particular part, but in general blending sharp edges and radiusing will keep it from cracking, but removing material from a balanced rotating part would require rebalancing. That is what I would do no matter how little was removed. 6000 rpms is not the ideal time to find an imbalance of a rotating assembly.

No doubt it may work. Well balanced parts will last longer and cause less issues throughout the entire vehicle. That little shake you feel at idle is imbalance. The rattles in the back are imbalance. Some can't be avoided, or it is not economical to fix some things anyway. Up to the discretion of the user. The ol Cha-evy tree-fidy fixem upper style is tried and tested by rednecks all over the place... It will probably work for awhile, but how long is the question.

Thanks All!!! I was having a break things kind of day....
I ground it clean and it was not as bad as I thought, I also fit the serp belt and its fine.
Well see in the future?
