Default question about a head swap and tuning

Hey guys got a pretty simple question, I've got a 98 ws6 trans am with 806 heads on it, I got my hands on a set of 243 heads with all the parts I need to swap them(valve covers etc etc) my question is this, aside from being the better center bolt covers and flowing a little better is the swap worth it? And if I do the swap how far off is my tune going to be? I'm assuming the car will still be drive able until I can get it tuned?

The 243 heads are an improvement over the 806 castings, which means they are going to introduce more air into the engine, which means you're going to need a tune to compensate for the increased airflow. Can you get by without a tune, probably so, but I wouldn't want to chance it. Also, if you're going to pull the heads you might as well do a cam swap while you're at it. A cam swap is going to yield far greater gains than just swapping the heads. Doing both will make the car feel like another animal.

If you drive it straight to the tuner and take it super easy you should be ok, but it definitely will need tuning

I and several others have ran ls6 crate motors on a stock ls1 tune with no issues.

I realize what your saying about the increased airflow I was just curious how far off the tune would be and whether or not it would be drive able but now that I think about it I'll just save for a cam and headers and do everything at the same time.

That makes the most sense. Do it all at once and then pay once for a tune.

I personally would have them worked over a bit before going through a head swap but some people are different. Stock the gain should be somewhere around 10-15 hp I would assume.

I agree with you on that too, but if he does a cam swap, puts on a good set of headers and a better exhaust, the 243's, even in stock form, will pick up a great deal over what he has now. If you have the means, send them to AI for there 232cc CNC program.
