Default Dumb Question about band clamps

Never really ran into this before....I did a search and came up empty.

When you order stainless band clamps like from Jegs...which is the measured side the larger or the smaller side. Jeg's gives one size per clamp, ie: 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 3", etc. Is that the larger side of the clamp?

Explain.. the clamps have 2-sides one smaller than the other but the listing on the clamps has only one size. Do you mean the size listed is the smaller side of the clamp?

Here's the link to better explain what I mean...

the size listed is the bigger side of the clamp. the small side of the clamp goes on the tappered end of the slip fit.

Are you sure about that? The small end is the OD of the normal pipe, the big end is slightly larger to account for the pipe being expanded to fit over the other pipe (as in a slip-fit connection). When you make a slip-fit connection, you don't reduce one end, you expand it.

So basically, buy the size listed, for the size of your piping. I had dual 3" piping (slip fit) and I bought 2 3" band clamps just like the ones you listed, and they fit perfectly.

I would agree with this as well since most slip fits are done with a pipe expander.

You need to confirm that the band clamps are for slip fit joints. There are two types out there, some for slip fits and some for butt joints.
