At what point do cats become a major bottleneck?
Right now I have an ORY and I don't like the smell...so I'm planning to make a frankendual exhaust using two 3" magnaflow cats, magnaflow x-pipe and pre-bent pipe sections.
I don't think the 3" cats will sap too much power away, however I would like to know how far I can go before I will NEED to remove the cats. Later down the line I want to get an SC or turbo, not sure yet, still saving $$$ for that, but I don't want to have to replace the exhaust when that time comes.

Because of the smell...I do not like smelling exhaust when I roll down my windows or turn on the AC/Heater.
I know that having cats on my current setup will not be a huge difference; what I would like to know is at what point they'll become too restrictive to have. If I run a procharger, will the cats become a lot more restrictive? My ultimate goal is to have a car that can smoke motorcycles...but I'd like to be able to do what in comfort and style.

THat's the thing, I don't really want to take them off in the future so I was hoping there were cats that I could use that would not hit me up for more than 10-15 HP if I were doing something more extreme like an SC or a 402 engine swap. I'll check those dynatechs...any place that has flow info on cats?

I've seen cat flow data posted (a long while back) and
I think maybe on Random Technology's web site there
are some comparos?
The thing is that the better they flow, the less they
scrub.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. A cat that flows really well probably won't do as much as a typical one would as far as cleaning the exhaust goes. I guess I'll have to experiment and see if I can find a decent compromise between performance and exhaust smell. Thanks for the input.

Random tech
If you want some really high flowing cats, we sell the Random Tech 3" metal substrate bullet cats. They flow an incredible 598 CFM each! With that kind of flow, HP loss would be minimal.

The issue isn't when you put them on but after a few thousand miles. That 10 to 15 hp can turn into 20 to 30 when they begin to clog which starts the minute you start the car.
Also, if you're smelling exhaust when turning on the AC and such you have exhaust leaks.
With a good tune it's hard to even tell if you have cats or not.

How could I check for exhaust leaks? It was already checked by the shop that did the work on my car, but if it's something I could do myself, I might as well.
