Whats the easiest way to get the top bolt off, the one closer to the firewall? What is the easiest way to get the refrigerant lines off? I should drain the whole system right?

You should recover the R134 that is in it not just let it out,you could probably get a local shop to evacuate the system and record the total number of ounces, and then for a small charge they can vacuum down your system to get out any moisture and recharge your system with what they removed and add how much 134 it needs to make it full, if you leave it open for any period of time replace the dryer(AC canister) being a 98 and as cheap as they are it would be a waste not to do it. Just take your time the compressor is easy to R & R.

Is there any way to disconnect the compressor without refrigerant coming out?

Only if you are VERY fast. It's sort of like when you let the smoke out of an IC chip. It's very hard to get that smoke back in, but some people claim they can do it.

So i'll definitely have to replace the canister if i change the compressor?

Whats the P/N and how much does an A/C canister cost?

You don't absolutely have to replace it as long as you don't leave the system OPEN for an extened period of time. If you have all the parts on hand as well as the tools needed (flare nut wrenches, 134 freon) you can do this job in short order.

My plan is to replace the compressor and then take it to a shop so they can oil and charge it. The system should not be open for more than the time it takes to move the lines from one compressor to another. I don't have a flare nut wrench, is that a necesiity or just something to make it easier?

Go ahead and replace the dryer you can probably get one for around 40 bucks and because yours is 7 years old it should help the AC performance.

When you can't get those fasteners loose without a flare nut wrench you'll be able to answer your own question.

The fasteners I'm talking about are the hex nuts on the high side of the A/C system, not a bolt. The have to be very tight because they're on the high pressure side. That's why flare nut wrenches are required. They're made especially for this type of job.

now i understand fully. i didnt even get that far. I think i'm still under the "mom" warranty so she might pay for it to get done because i dont want to attempt and pssobly **** something up. I've done head gasket changes and accessory replacement before, but its so damn hot and the tools at my house are in serious disarray. the conditions are real f'ed up so i'll leave it up to the pros for now.
