Help Me Beat This Guy!
Hey everyone, i have a friend with an 01 Z28 M6 that claims to have run a 12.6 in the 1/4mile. We are all gonna go up to sears point on wednesday and run all of our cars once and for all. All he has is an aftermarket TB... i donno which one, he didnt say. But other than that he is completely stock. My car is in my sig. This is probly gonna turn out to be a drivers race. But my question is, what can i do to my car that doesnt cost a lot of money and that will add power.... and by 'not a lot of money' i mean like under 100 dollars... im a poor college student. Ive searched for the free mods, but i donno exactly what to do. What have you guys done? and could you feel power from it? Basically i just wanna know how i can tool around with my car to beat this guy! ...loosing has never been my strong suit

i HIGHLY doubt he is hiding anything. all his friends called BS on him. He is a senior in high school. I really dont think hes hiding anything... i also dont think hes ever been to the track. how do i do the free ram air mod? i heard there was something about cutting an EGR hose too?

Once, I ran into a guy with the single turbo Grand National. Told me that his car made high 280's in rear wheel HP & ran in the mid twelves. I asked him if he'd ever been to the track & he said "not yet".
My point is that your friends car may be capable of 12.6 with a perfect launch, no missed shifts, & hitting his shift points, in cool weather. On street tires with a TB, i'd expect to see consistent runs in the say mid 13's with good driving.
I may get flamed for this, but, the cheapest mod you can make is to remove your air filter for the race. Only remove it for the 2 or 3 runs.

ya, i donno ive never seen him drive, which is why im kinda worried... but i also was worried about racing my friends geared, exhaust, and intake 5.0 stang a while back... i worry too much!
would that really help to take the filter out? i never thought of that. does anyone know anyone that has actually done all the free mods to their car?

ive thought about that too. im probly gonna take my seats and my backpack and my binder out. i also thought about taking the ttops out, but i dont know if that would hurt or help me with the aerodynamics. i also thought about taking them off and putting them in the back so that i have more weight in the back for traction. those little pounds add up ya know? the things i do to my car have to be done by wednesday though. so i cant order anything or take things apart that much ya know?

i would NOT suggest taking yout t-tops off. the best way to run your car aerodynamically is with the t-tops on and windows rolled up. if you are going to a track- rules are usually set that windows should be rolled up anyways. taking the back seats out are not hard at all. as long as you have the little 6-point star sockets and about 20-40 mins on your hands youll be fine. practice gettin the launch. practice practice practice. its hard the first time at the track. otherwise good luck be safe let us know how it goes!

1st, i doubt thats all he has is a ported TB to run 12.6....maybe 13.6, thats about right.
2nd, any mods you do for under $100 is BARELY going to make a difference. i read you need atleast 15rwhp to actually "feel" a difference and i dont know anything thats going to give you 15rwhp for under $100.
3rd, you removing your back seats is going to be worthless. remember, 100lbs is roughly .1 when running 13s and 12s and 100lbs is alot to remove from your car.
4th, leave the t-tops in.

Get a lid, do the throttle body bypass, try to hit the track a couple times before you race him. Drop some weight(back seats, spare tire, jack). The little things can help you out. Practice your launches and figure out how your car likes to be treated.
Going out to the track you'll be racing on the weekend before and figuring out the tire pressure, and RPM launch that works best for you will help you the most.

What about that exhaust...who needs it? Take it off after the factory Y. But only for the race because Johnny Law-Dog might get you. By the way, the EGR mod was to cut the pipe that extends down into the intake path and there's a how-to on it here: http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm
You could just completely remove it but time restraints might prevent you from getting a block-off plate...unless you make it.

As far as removing the EGR just get some 22 guage steel and tin snips and you can easily make the blockoff plates yuorself. Oh yea don't forget to get some RTV sealant (the one in the red tube is for higher heat applications). I removed my A.I.R and EGR in about 20 minutes. The only negative thing about this mod is that damn SES light. 12.6 is pretty close to redunculase w/ on the TB. As far as I know there shouldn't be much HP differance between you cars you should both have the LS1 intake. Since ur both manuals I'm thinkin the better driver will take it down. Lastly, just remember that 90% of drag races are won or lost in the first 60 feet. Just my .02
