Okay, went to the exhaust shop that I got all my exhaust done on my previous cars, asked about 3" cutouts and the dude told me I won't gain a thing. I said I'd be putting it somewhere back by before the muffler, where I've seen several on F-bodies already. He said unless I have some LT headers it's not worth it, unless I want it just for the sound. Something about backpressure or something, he also said I should put 2 cutouts up right after the LT's
I plan on buying some Pacesetter LT's and TSP ORY in the next 6 months or so, this way I could use those without messing around with moving the cutout afterwords. I figured I'd lose a little bit of low end torque but gain about 10rwhp with just a cutout with current mods.
Thoughts?

If you plan on doing a LT's and the ORY and then why not wait six months to get the cutout? Kind of pointless to spend money on something you are gonna re-do in 6 months? unless you are reusing the catback you have now and the cutout would be in the I pipe of the catback then i would understand

A cutout on an otherwise bone stock exhaust won't gain you much at all, mostly just sound. It'll move your torque curve up a little higher in the rpm range. Once you have the better breathing lt's/ory on there, a cutout can gain you some horsepower over the catback that you have, depending on how restrictive that catback is. IMO, I'd wait on the cutout until you get the rest of your exhaust.

a cutout on a stock car is some of the cheapest horse, cost me 20 for the cutout and 20 to weld it, its good for 10rwhp or so on a stock car with stock exhaust.

If you have a free flowing catback and you're still running stock manifolds and cats, the cutout will gain you virtually 0 hp. The reason why is that the manifolds become the choke point of the exhaust. Now if you're still running the stock catback, then yes, you'll gain a few ponies...probably 5-10, but that's what a good catback will net you as well.
Once you get long tube headers and a high flowing y-pipe, you move the choke point of the exhaust further back and the catback becomes the restriction. At this point, a cutout is more worth it. Also keep in mind that the stock cam is very insensitve to back pressure compared to a cam with lots of overlap.
When I was running the CheaTR cam, opening up the cutout gained me 2 rwhp (431 to 433 rwhp). Then, after I swapped to the TRak cam (with lots more overlap), my cutout gained me 11 rwhp (444 to 455 rwhp). The TRak cam did not tolerate back pressure as well as the CheaTR cam.

Thanks for the input guys. My exhaust system is completely stock right now. I love the sound of an open cutout, and I'd be putting it on the I-pipe. A little less low end torque isn't a big deal to me right now anyways, I have enough traction problems with the 4.10's as it is.
