Default How much of a PITA is it to pull the intake manifold?

Just wondering how big of a PITA it is. I've done my headers and motor mounts myself so I figure this is probably not something too hard for me.

I want to pull it so I can paint it, but if its going to take FOREVER it can wait, how long should it take and whats involved??

Pulling is no problem. You just have to remember to get the back 4 bolts and not break the oil sending unit. On is a different story. You have to leave the back 4 bolts in the intake otherwise you will not be able to put them in.

yup. Its easy as hell. Just take your time and be careful of all the plugs and sensors back there.

Whats the best way if any to NOT break the oil (pressure?) sending unit ?

Just being careful probably won't cut it for me, because I tend to break anything when there is a possibility

Lol, well I was gonna say, just be aware that it is there and keep that in mind the whole time you are moving it around.

its just taking your time and being careful. I mean you really have to knock that sensor pretty hard to get it to break off. Its on there pretty good. Just dont go tugging at the manifold or anything like that.

hahaha your not going to break it! get it out of your head. trust me, most people who break that thing are unaware that its even there - you can do it!

Usually around 30 bucks though from the local parts store I believe

... i broke mine, ill have to check and see how much it was. Take my advice and just be patient. I dropped a fuel rail bolt (which didnt hit the ground) and searched forever for it, then got impaient with the vaccum lines in back and... pop there goes the sensor. Just to top it off i ended up late for work Just dont be a dumbass like me, take your time and you'll be fine

The main thing to worry about is the large vacuum line that goes to the brake booster - that is generally what snaps the sensor. It snakes behind the sensor (closer to the firewall) so when you pull the intake forward that line catches on the sensor. Just be careful to raise it above the sensor when sliding the intake forward, and you should be good. Had mine off twice and haven't broken the sensor yet, and like you I break everything!

Only takes about an hour to pull and replace the manifold. You will need to reach around the back and disconnect the vacuum line and MAP sensor. A little duct tape works well to hold the rear bolts up while you remove the manifold.

Ya, I busted my sending unit a month or so back when doing the 90 conversion. Just don't yank on the intake to to get it out. Check to make sure everything is disconnected, then check again. If you break it, it's no big deal it cost $30 at the local pepboy's. I used a trick, by getting some small 1/4 hose to and cut it, to set the back 4 bolt in, which lifted the bolt high enough to get the intake in. And when your ready to tighten the bolts just pull off the hose.

If you lift the intake with a second person it is very simple. Ive done this twice and the last time i had a buddy there and the lifting and maneuvering was so easy having 2 more hands on it. That way it is easy to move all the lines and pull at the same time.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I took mine off twice without knowing about the fragile sending unit and somehow managed not to break it.

go to autozone and buy an oil pressure sending unit socket ($6.00) , then you can slip the socket over the sending unit before you start yanking on things.it wont break with the socket over the unit.i just broke mine last week, $32.00 from the dealership, noone else had them available

pics of mine all done
