Default is this too large a diameter pipe?

my friend has an 01 silverado that will be getting a 408 soon, and the local shop recommended a dual 3" exhaust with an x pipe and borla xr1 mufflers (no cats). The headers are ceramic coated pacesetter long tubes. any one have any ideas?

No, I dont think its too big. Running 2.5" might beef up the low end torque a little bit, but its questionable wether or not youll be leaving some HP on the table. Id say the 3" pipe will be a good fit.

low end torque doesnt mean much anyways, with a 3500 stall and 4.11 gears.

That would be an awesome choice for him. That 408, that stall, and that gear set is going to make for a stump puller.

The mufflers can be swapped around if he'd like. A set of 1-chamber flowmasters or 2 3" in/out 40 series would work well. The trucks are not as constricted as far as clearance goes. They can run mufflers that actually "muffle" and sound great. The 3" duals w/ x-pipe is a great choice (on any application), and his options are pretty open as far as mufflers go.

i should have been more clear, the truck is lowered 5 in front and 7 in back, so clearance may be an issue, which is the reason for the slim borlas. just worried about the pipe diameter mostly. thanks!

Yikes! That pipe diameter is perfect. If he has the cheese, he can build an oval tubing system which would be

3" duals (according to some flow/square inch info posted a few days ago) is good for about 740rwhp before any kinda problems arise.
