Default MAF worth it?

I always see used aftermarket MAFs for sale on these boards. They are usually a good price compared to the new ones. Can they really make the 15hp that the ads claim? If not, is it still a worthwhile mod or should I spend my money elsewhere?

Spend the money on something else. The stocker is good to 500 550 hp.

The reason you see them for sale is the fact they are no good.

The stocker as others have said is fine for serious power, more than a h/c combo can throw at it anyhow.

The aftermarket ones only make that power over STOCK. And the reason is they give a false reading to the PCM which causes the motor to run leaner - thus more power. However most people have problems with them, rough idle, poor throttle response. And in many cases they actually end up making the car run so bad they end up with less HP than they started with.

Anyhow a good tune will acheive the same results but under controlled conditions.

Nope stocker is fine man. Just get a tune alot of the MAf's dont read real well on LS1's from the factory. Especially the 99's.....They only read around 1.3 g's should be up around 2.3g's or so.

Only get one if you are planning on getting a tune with it. Otherwise you will run into problems, thus you would be putting it up for sale just like everyone else does.

definitely not worth the money, if anything you can recalibrate with a tuning program--(which i had to do because of the intake mods i did) for some reason it was making my car run lean when i put in my FTRA-recalibrated the MAF an it works much better now-so save your money for something much better

I think they are worth it if you want your entire intake tract to be large diameter. Like if you have a FAST 90/90 combo and a 85mm Lid then an 85mm MAF would get rid of the bottle neck stock 75mm MAF. Tuning would also be needed to recalibrate the PCM.

Aftermarket MAF's suck ***** without tuning because they just trick the computer.
