Merge collectors. Worth it???
I currently have a set of headers on order from QTP. I now see that the merge collectors are an option. The car will have a Stage 2 H/C set with a 224/224-112 .568 cam.
Would i see a noticable difference from the regular collectors by going to the merge collectors?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Merge collectors. Worth it???
I dont think the price of merge collectors is worth it unless you run open headers. Once you strap a y-pipe and a full catback on the car the gains minimal compared to an open header situation. With all this talk about nascar technology merge collectors we should keep in mind that nascar runs open headers!

what if you run the merge collectors into the dual cut-out Y-Pipe? That's a pretty open exhaust when the cut-outs are open.
Also if you are using a 3" Y-pipe, that is still a pretty big Y on a 346 motor. Each side of the Y has a pretty big area to flow just half of the motor's output.

They run h or x-pipes and mufflers.
Merge collectors are indeed worth some power over standard collectors. In the April issue of Car Craft, they found 11 peak hp (517 to 528 rwhp) by changing to merge collectors from standard versions.

Re: Merge collectors. Worth it???
FYI there are many nascar weekly racing series cars in this country that are required to run a muffler and they do so using a merge collector for maximum hp and tq. Although cup car's run no muffler's they also don't run a conventional header either, they use a tri-y set up.
Back to my point there are thousand's of differen't style merges for various applications... you just have to figure out what works for you. I wouldn't waste my time without them, when your looking for that extra gain here is a good place to start. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Glad to help. Merge collectors are the real deal. As Woody said to all the toys in "Toy Story", "if you don't have one, get one.

Merge collectors are not meant for single exhaust. Use merge collectors with true duals and an "X" pipe!
I personally use dual 3-1/2" head pipes thru an "X" then into 3" true duals. And to silence all of the nay sayers.....with closed exhaust and a dinky B1 cam my car is one of the most powerful 5.7's at low RPM producing 350 RWTQ at 3000 RPM with 1-3/4" to 1-7/8" stepped headers no less so don't buy into the crap that you'll also lose low end!
