Could ported MAF ends actually make you lose power?
I have been running whisper MAF ends on my car( 99 formula)with stock tuning and I was wondering if maybe if the ends could make me lose power. Anyone know if they had problems with these being put on 99 LS-1's?. I have been reading interesting things about MAF ends recently. Seems like cars with similar mods are going faster then me and they have stock ends. I have ran a best of 13.01 with exhaust, lid, FTRA,full interior+ 3/4 tank of gas

Depending on the car, sure they could. What will happen is the car may run lean and then the knock will go up and so will the reduction in the timing as a result. This is a widepsread issue with ported MAF ends.

yeah.....MAF ends result in the computer not reseaving a correct reading of the incomming air. The result is the engine goes lean. Some times its not enough to cause problems (perhaps the car ran a tad bit rich to beguin with) but often, the lean condition causes knock. The resulting knock causes the computer to cut spark advance. Less spark advance = less HP. You can either go back to unmodified factory ends or reprogram the computer with LS1Edit and AutoTap.

Re: Could ported MAF ends actually make you lose power?
Ive definetaly seen posts of people getting KR from them and going slower. I also saw a debate where a lot of people seemed to think it had a part in failed 4L60E trannys. I dont remember the exact proposal behind it, but it was good information.
But I definetaly noticed a difference in how my car ran, going from the ported ends back to stock ends. It was easier to tune and my car definetaly gained a few ponies...

do a simple ATAP test..
log your 02's, timing, LTRIMS, and KR and see if you get any. That will answer your question instead of guessamating it

those are just a few of the items to look at.
Tricking the computer, changes the load that it sees, which has an effect on almost all functions of the PCM, injector pulse rate, timing, ect.
The MAF is not a physical restriction on most cars, so there is no large performance increase to get by modifying it, do it the right way, and tune the PCM more agressive.
Ryan.

Porting the MAF, or using aftermarket ends will be a crap shoot. Same with just removing the screen.
The screen makes the air flow over the MAF wires in a very specific pattern. Removing that changes the airflow. Yes, you might flow more air, but it's not being metered properly.
It will do one of two things ... make you run a little leaner, or make you run a little richer. Personally, on both of my LS1's, it threw me a little richer.
I've been experimenting with some different things. Currently I'm running the stock front half with the screen intact. Behind the sensor, however, I'm running the ported half.
The jury is still out on this one, but I should be at the track within a few weeks to put the car through its paces.
