Default about to install poly motor mounts, need help

My manual says not to lift the engine by the oil pan, but I guess I have to. Where is the best place to lift it by? I'm thinking right where the oil pan meets the bell housing, using a phone book on top of a big piece of wood. Does that sound right?

thanks!

Sounds about right. The motor doesn't have to be lifted much. You are limited on where to put the jack because of the crossmember. Be prepared for very little room to work and not being able to see what you are doing. I did mine while I had the heads and headers off, much, much easier. Here's a few links that might help.....a little.

yup. and you're not so much "lifting" as you are supporting. I used a 6x6 on a tranny jack stand.
good luck, it's a really shitty job. If you don't have headers, wait until you get them and do it at the same time. Working around the exhaust is the crappiest part and makes in about 1000 x's harder.

Wrapping a chain around the oil pan, then having a chain go to the back of the driver head and one of the passenger head will support and balance it well. I have used this method many times. Whenever i pull my motor, or if you are scared of the oil pan, attatch a chain to the back of each heads and one in the front. the top of the bellhousing works too, but the manifold should be removed for this. I highly suggest you remove your manifolds/headers for poly mount install. It will make your life easier.

The manifolds are removed. I don't understand the chain idea though?

Its fine, just put something between the jack and the oil pan and lift that bitch up.

This should help a little too.

Not that the chains are wrong (they are probably more correct) but the whole chain thing sounds like a lot more effort. Although, if you're doing it on your back, it might be nice to not have a jack there.

BTW, they are talking about using an engine hoist with the chains.

Jack under oil pan/bellhousing connection protected by a phone book. Make sure you disconnect the air lid and watch for the manifold hitting the cowl.

It is a bitch, but worth it.

What are you having trouble with? I found it hard to bolt the mount back to the block. I ended up getting about 4 3/8" extensions, linking them together, then feeding them in through the steering/a-arm with a deep socket and swivel attached to the end. I then used my air ratchet, zipped 'em in, then tightened them down.

It seems like the motor moved towards the back of the car. The drivers side is in, but the pass side is about a half inch off.

Yea that happens, you are going to have to play with the jack to move the motor up and down and a bigass prybar will be your friend.

Also for me I had to feed the bolts halfway in on both sides in order for them to stay lined up (in one side but not out the other)

I think I did the same thing with the bolts. or at least I had to take the first one I did out and do the other first. As I recall, the passenger had to go in first and to help get it lined up, insert a heavy duty screwdriver into the bolt hole (as if its a bolt) and use it to line up the mount correctly and then once it's lined up, you can usually remove the screwdriver and it will stay until you put the bolt in. If that doesn't make sense, I can draw a picture.

If you're still stuck, when you read this, I highly recommend just pulling the driver side bolt out and starting with the passenger.

The good thing about this mod is you will instantly feel a difference the first time you move the car so it's worth it.

You can loosen the trans mount and shove it over as well.
