It does not need a MAF. I would probably just take it out and inspect it for physical damage or clean it with some carb spray. No fuel regulator. I would clean it and see what happens. Is the honeycomb screen still in place on it?

Does the filter look to be recharged or oiled recently? I know that sometimes if the fiter is oiled and some of that oil gets on the MAF it will throw the reading off and cause the check engine light to come on. I second the motion to just remove it, inspect it, and clean it and then disconnect your positive battery terminal for a minute or two and allow the computer to reset it's self

P0171/P0174 is lean both banks. Clean/inspect the MAF, replace the air filter first. Loose gas cap is P0440. When disconnecting the battery remove the neg cable, or you can reset the PCM this way:

Turn key on, don't start car
Pull PCM BATT and PCM IGN fuses in engine compartment
Wait 5-10 min
Turn ignition off
Replace fuses

Anytime the PCM is reset idle will be grumpy for a few minutes until it relearns.

Im, an old school carb guy never worked on one of these when taking out the mass flow is it as simple as unplugging and removing it ? same with the fuel regulator is it under pressure or is that only when the key is on ?

I had those two codes thrown last week. I took off my MAF and cleaned it with pure rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. After four drive cycles the the SES light went off. However, the code was still listed under History Failed Test. So I did eventually clear the codes out myself. It has not re-appeared.

Default po171 and p0174

CrazyCucky, or any one else that can help in order to clean the mass flow sensor all you have to do is unplug it and remove it ???? then clean and install ?Will the car need to be reprogramed after reinstalling ? would most people reset the light by disconnecting the battery or wait for it to cycle 40 times

Just unplug the connector on the MAF sensor and disconnect the clamps on both ends. When done cleaning, just do the opposite. No reprogramming is needed.

the car dosent even need a MAF to run. it sounds like you just baby the car around and dont drive it hard. just ignore the light. there is nothing wrong with your car if it obviously runs and drives A.O.K. SES light pertains to the polution controls almost exclusively and should just be ignored unless you are concered about optiumum performance
