Default No Muffler?

I was wondering if it would hurt the performance of my car if I removed the muffler and ran with straight pipes until I buy full exhaust. I started my last LS1 with no muffler, it was with the stock manis/y-pipe and it sounded awesome, and wasnt too loud. So will it be OK or will i lose too much backpressure?

Thanks
-Scott

It would be just fine. IMO the stock cats muffle almost as well if not better than mufflers. You'll lose a little bit of low end but you probably wont notice it.

I highly doubt you'll lose any low end at all. Its no different than an aftermarket cat-back. Figure a mufferless 2.75" pipe probably flows as good as a high-flow 3" muffled system.

losing backpressure is a good thing, what you are talking about is scavenging, and I dont think you will lose too much. However, when I ran my car straight Y pipe, it wanted to shut off a few times on the freeway.

i might have to disagree, about this talk......i was talking to a fellow ls1'r the other day......and we talked about this backpressure debate....he had trual duals....NO xpipe or bullets...just straight piping.....he said he was getting worked at the track on the low end.....he switched his exhaust setup to a xpipe and dynomax bullets....which in turn would add more back pressure.....and his 60' times picked up....nothing else was done to the car.....

I've done it twice so far. It doesn't sound too bad and it won't cost you much.
