Default Collector Band clamps

How are you guys that have the band clamps using these? Are you lining up the end of the clamp with the end of the collector or are you centering the clamp over the joint? I have the 3" stainless clamps from Napa, they are leaking like crazy. If I go any tighter I probably will break the clamp or bolt.

I see, i thought about a thin piece of rubber or something. So you centered the clamp over the joint?

Add some hi-temp gasket maker as mentioned above, & center the clamp. They should conform to the step. They do have torque settings for the bolts. Donaldson's document shows, "Do not exceed 70ft/lbs."

Ok I appreciate it, I will give that a try tomorrow. I was concerned as to weather or not the clamps would conform to the step.

I've taken a length of aluminum foil, bent it in half about 10 times untill it's about 2" wide and long enough to wrap around the pipe. Then I centered it over the slip joint, and put the bandclamp over that. Makes a kind of dead soft gasket that conforms to the joint.
