Holley Annihilator DIS Ignition Vs Stock GM
On another thread on this board someone mentioned the new Holley DIS ignition, Checked into it, is laptop programmable and stand alone!
Just over $400 I believe. Puts out approx 135 millijoules of energy per spark. Does anyone know what the stock LS1 GM spark puts out? Thanks!

1.21 gigawatts...your thinking of the flux capacitor option on the 98 1/2 Trans Ams with the time travel laptop software.

1.21 gigawatts?? Thats deep! (there's that word again..) It's Back To Reality...
Besides the probable (?) higher energy output of the Holley product, it's completely stand alone and laptop programmable... Some one this site have one yet?? Anyone? Are very interested to hear about one

I believe is what you are talking about. AFAIK it is quite a bit more than 400 dollars - if that is the version that allows individual cylinder timing control it is closer to 2000 I believe.
It also appears to require the use of a crank trigger of some sort.
It is really intended for use with the holley commander 950 efi computer - both are retrofit items (note the "not compatible with OEM electronics")
Some benefit could be derived if one had 8 widebands/egt's - one in each primary - and used the individual cylinder timing. Other than that it really isn't usefull.
LS1 Edit allows timing control without all the extra hassle of this.
Spark output concers are pretty much moot as the coil on plug setup already provides more than enough energy.

Re: Holley Annihilator DIS Ignition Vs Stock GM
ChrisB,
Thanks for the reply, since posing I spoke to our supplier, who now says its US$2,500 for that. That's OK, (were sponsored, not my money!), but have to stick to our yearly budget, hence trying to determine its worth for our current car.
LS1 Edit can do that, true, but I was thinking of the laptop programmable as it is a 3D graph layout. Also, Holley says you won't need the Commander 950, but that with the Annihilator would be probably the Ultimate LS1 drag race set-up, I thought. Both Windows based, stand alone, 3D maps, totally programmable...
Maybe PSJ or Nineball could also comment??
Cheers

Re: Holley Annihilator DIS Ignition Vs Stock GM
If you have a way of quantitatively differentiating the effects of changes in individual cylinder timing (the 8 egt or wideband setup, etc.) then there could definitely be some power there - that is a capability not available in the stock system.
Other than that though I don't think there is much power to be derived from it - the extra spark energy is not required, and timing can be programmed to whatever value is desired in the stock computer.
With the commander 950 setup you can run SD, get rid of the MAF, and simplify the computer management - the stock computer really is at a complexity level where altering the tunes drastically isn't not a simple manner.
The combination of the two above is what quite a few stock eliminator racers here in the US run.
I would personally preferr a FAST setup - I believe there is even a piggyback harness available so you can still retain most stock ocmputer functionality (guages, etc.) On a pure race setup this probably isn't an issue though.
I would *guess* that other areas are a better option for making power - header tuning, merge collectors, electric water pumps, intake work, etc. (don't know what your class allows).
