Your talking about the metal rectangular piece right? I'm about to make my own cold air tubing system but it's going to be a completely different setup. I'll post up when I do it

There is a write-up/description of some guy that did the same thing.
He made a plate with two 3" holes in it thet fit right under the airlid.
Then he used A/C ducting to the holes.
He removed the bumper support (foam thing) and fed the A/C ducts down to the grille and fixed them into the grille holes (Camaro).
Apparently gained like .3-.4 in the 1/4 and some real nice power when moving (didn't show much on the Dyno but when actually moving there were greater gains).
The only problem being how exposed your intake is to rain/dirt and the opening seriously could suck up birds/bushes/small children, etc.

Theres a pic of mine, i'll try to take some better ones later. I have some grill material in front of the ducts plus the billet grill infront of that, so those help keep the chances of sucking in a bird to a minimum

the point of doing something like this over fasttoysramair is if you do it right, you won't block off the radiator. Also, I wouldn't dream of removing the foam from under the bumper unless my car was just a drag car.

Here is one that I peiced together from separate components uncluding the elbow. Cost is about 70 bucks with a K&N air filter including the elbow.
