Default What do I need besides a basic cam kit?

Hey guys...
I want to pick up thunder racings 'old mans cam' and kit for my car.
Theres only 39000 miles on the engine, so my question is....
Do I really need to swap in a new oil pump and timing chain?
What else do I need?
Thanks.

It's not so much a question of NEED to swap these parts, but more of a why not since you've done all the work to get at them.
Averaging ~$100 per I coudn't justify NOT picking up..
  1. LS2 Timing Chain
  2. LS6 Oil Pump
  3. Water pump gasket set
  4. Timing cover gasket set

I did it mostly for piece of mind and convenience.
The work just getting to them is almost justification enough not to want to do it again.

I don't know the specs on the old man cam, but it may not be a bad idea to get some comp 918's. As far as the timing chain and the oil pump..............depends on how much cash you have at the time..........If you have the money go ahead and do it.

When I did my cam, I replaced the timing chain, but I did not replace oil pump. It would have been a good idea, but I didn't have any extra cash.

I believe the kit comes with the necessary valve springs. I'd say replace them since you are already in there and it would suck if you had to replace them a few months down the road.

I'm a pretty cheap SOB and hate to spend money on something if it ain't broke. I've been keeping stock parts for years and I haven't had a problem yet (waiting for my day to come). OF course its better to replace them but, with so few miles-no way would I replace them. IF you plan on 6200 full throttle revs everyday, then yes get a new chain otherwise I say forget it.

You could always do a search to see how many people have failed oil pumps especially if they did a cam change on high mileage engines, to see if it really happens alot. If your getting good oil pressure then stay with it. If you hate digging into the engine with a passion, then maybe you should replace them

I've often pulled the water pump and timing cover and found those gastkets appeared to be in tact. I reused them with success even though I had new ones sitting on the shelf. I do NOT apply this philosophy to the timing cover crank seal. That one ALWAYS gets changed. The cost/labor ratio isn't worth risking it. You'll also need a new crank pulley bolt as the OEM is TTY.

i replaced my oil pump, chain, springs, and pushrods for my camswap at 50k. i'd say do it and do it once. even if your a cheap bastard, $200 now is better than $200 later, plus another $800 in labor just to get there
