Default what size pipe for true duals?

im using hooker shorty headers and a true dual system w/ an H pipe. Just wondering what size pipe is best for power.


just a note, im not looking for ANY power at the high end (max speed)lol i need everything at the low end(take off)

I've heard you will get more hp with X pipe then H pipe. X pipe is louder too

2.5" for sure. There's no need for 3" TD's. All it's going to do is sacrifice ground clearance with no additional gains. If anything, the 2.5" will make things feel more torquey. 99% of the people on this site will never need 3" TD's. They'll only hurt you.

3.00. it may free up a few HP if you decide to one day go with bigger CI. Plus its a jeep! Half an inch isn't going to take away all of the clearance.

3" for sure, it's not going to hurt anything now and you'll have room to make more power with it. And for the record, I had 3" duals with Magnaflow 4x9s on my SS which is lowered on a pro-kit and ground clearance wasn't an issue, at least not any more so than when I had my TSP off road y with a Borla catback exhaust.

whats a 'CI' ???

a mechanic at my work also said go w/ 3'' pipe. On the poll though 3'' and 2.5'' is at a TIE w/ 8votes for each....lol

how about 2.75??

CI= Cubic Inches. THe bigger the motor the more air it will move.

CC did an article a few years ago testing 2.5", 3.0" and 3.5" dual exhausts for power ant tourque on a 396 70 Chevelle. While the 3" was the best choice for a strip car with limited street and the 3.5" was best for a strip only car. The 2.5" was best overall for a street driven vehicle. At lower RPMs tourque was up everywhere over the two larger diameter exhaust systems. 80% of us are doing just fine with the stock style single 3".

I stated this in another exhaust thread you started. Since it's a Jeep and you desire tourque over top end HP, I would go with a 2.5" Y into a single 3" system. While not as flashy as duals, it will fit easier under your jeep, give you better low end and overall good perfoamance.

yea i would go with that set up but i cant use a Y-pipe because it hangs down and prevents the front driveshaft from going on. i have to do a true dual set up because i dont have to worry about wrapping the drivers side exhaust under the bellhousing to the other side- i can just have it go straight back going over the front drive shaft yoke on the transfer case


soo 2.5'' is winning the poll now.. hmm

i found a home made x pipe in my garage that MIGHT fit under my jeep, its for a 3'' system

I have long tubes and an X pipe. It is louder than a h pipe but mine is also 3 inch piping.

Besides ground clearance, how else would 3" hurt? I was going to get the TSP T/D's and they are 3" I believe.

Question

2-1/2" is all that's needed for 346ci. From all I have ever read here, it seems a 3" Y-Pipe is equal to 2-1/2" duals in flow.....I know 3" would be bigger..but is it better unless you have more cubey's.

Unless your spinning 8000+ Rpm's or running a good power adder 2.5" is plenty to support a stock cube motor.

yup yup^^^ the extra isnt really needed on a stock engine.

BTW i had a 2.5 on mine with ms4 cam and 226 cam. so there was air flowing threw the 2.5's lol

I bet if I made a 5" true dual set up with an X pipe and pro stock style mufflers that would fit under an F-body I would sell a million of them.

It's simply too big for a 346. You'll lose low end power. At 6,000 rpms, the 3" probably won't hurt you over the 2.5", but at 3,000 rpms, the 2.5" is going to help you. There's no need for a 3". I think people just make 3" for marketability. It sounds better to the masses. People have it beaten in their heads that 2.5" is too small because we think in terms of a catback, which is 3". A 3" pipe is simply too big for 4 of our cylinders IMO.

Even so, the TSP kit should outperform any y-pipe setup. I'm just not a fan of the TSP TD system. I don't want 3", I don't like X-pipes, I don't like dumps and I want single chambers and they don't offer them
