Default underdrive pulleys

Is it worth the $230 to bolt one up? I'm going for heads, cam, exhaust etc and I'm wondering if I should go for te ASP pulley set up? I want 410rwhp and the underdrive may be what I need to assue it.

Let me hear some opinions...

I guess if you have no other mods to do. To me a pulley isn't worth the price of it.

The cost per hp. is pretty high. Like most bolt-ons, you are not going to get all the claimed power, but you will get a few hp ( I think it is around 5-7, but don't quote me on it). Just be sure and get the overdrive pulley for the alternator if you do. It functions by turning your accessories slower, which makes the power steering a little firmer at slow speeds. But I was sitting in line at the strip when a car broke, and by the time they cleaned it up my battery had discharged. I put on the overdrive pulley and have never had an issue since.

You boys aren't looking at the big picture.... Not only do you get more power from this mod but you get about 2 mpg better on average. Sure the cost per hp is a lot but you will save a lot of money on gas especially with prices going up. To me it is totally worth it and i didnt buy it for the hp or tq increase. Oh yeah and if you do get the underdrive pulley get the alternator overdrive pulley... you will regret it if you dont.

I don't know if I believe that. Sure in theory you should see a gain in mpg but I never saw any from just the pulley swap. Now I did see about a 2mpg increase once I did header and got the car tunned.

The main reason I did an underdrive was it was the finishing touch. I had done all the other external mods before cracking the motor so I said why not might as well finish it off. Never felt any gains from it but my car makes good number for the mods it has and I like to think the underdrive has something to do with that. I have no charging problems or overheating problems even in the fl heat.

I have the same ASP under drive pulley since 03, No problems with charging or anything. If I had to buy another one I would get one again. As far as being expensive? Pfpfpfpfpfpf, You may have the wrong hobby then. I paid around a $200.00 for mine new in 03 and don't regret it at all. Hell, I probably **** more than 200.00 a month.

"you get about 2 mpg better on average"

where the hell did you come up with that??

i've had UD pulleys on 3 cars...305tpi, 96 LT1 and my 99LS1....didn't see ANY appreciable gain in gas mileage with the pulley.

i don't even see how it could be possible...at least not anything more than a .1 or .2 mpg increase....which would never be measureable on the street.

i don't have the alt pulley, and have never had a problem.

A gain is a gain, take it when you can get it. Especially when doing a cam its basically free Labor to do it. When I do mine it will be a SLP.

thats the only reason you need right there, isn't it? oh... wait... this isn't a mustang/ricer forum... Everything helps in the long run; i agree with those saying if you think $200 is too much... wait till you delve deeper into the hobby...it is worth it, and if you pick one up, the SLP and powerbond pullies have a nice lip on them to keep from throwin belts

I'm thinking about an underdrive pulley, too!!! I was thinking about an ASP set. Anybody have any probs with the ASP pulleys??? Like belts slipping off, or battery not charging good?
