It prevents Blow-by (oil from entering the intake). It has to do with the PCV valving on LS1 cars. You will inturn burn a little less oil. LS1's w/ the LS6 intakes have a slightly less issue with blow-by; but trust me, it is still there (i should know...uh).
I bought my can from RevXtreme; it is a kick-*** looking piece, very well made and TLewis4095 has been extremely helpful w/ answering all my ?'s (trust me, i had a lot). I will be installing mine as soon as the weather clears.

but...since you used clear tubing; cn you take a shot from a different angle showing where the top tub connects to? For some reason i'm still confused about that.

It's pouring down rain here, so no pics right now.
You have the hose that comes up to the PCV valve, running along by the passenger side valve cover and intake manifold.
Top hose of catch can goes to existing line/hose
Bottom hose on catch can goes to pcv valve.
Basically, the catch can goes "inline" between the hose and the PCV valve.

Different catch cans have different internal designs so the inlet & outlet may be different. The can in the pic looks good, but when we run the clear hose on ours it shows ZERO oil going out of the can.....it is the most effective I have seen to date. If anyone needs help when installing any brand just PM me & I will give you my cell to call & walk you through every step to make sure it is correct.

FWIW, my catch can also lets ZERO oil through it. Formerly clear hoses now have a yellowish tint to them from age/heat. According to my last Q-tip swab test, the inside of the hose going to PCV is dry.
Definitely a stand up offer from TLewis to help people out, even if they have someone elses catch can. Also his looks to be priced nicely.

Correct on the inline!
The breather in the oil fill cap is only needed in heads/cam or FI applications with above average high RPM operation to help relieve excess pressure. Most will not need it.
rel3rd's show's that they are needed & done properly work! He clearly understands the proper PCV system configuration & purpose.

those cans are kinda big, are there smaller ones??
I'm debating whether to do this, it adds clutter to the engine bay yet it is for a good purpose...... so indecisive i know lol

The key to removing the vapors is enough surface area to condense the vapors & mist into droplets that can then fall to the bottom & not be sucked through, so the larger the better & metal does the best cooling. So it is a trade off for effectivness VS compact size. Installed our 1 qt looks great under the hood, and for a smaller one Mike Norris's is one of the best looking & is functional.

So they normally bolt up to where the EGR was bolted to? I have a 98 Formula with LS6 intake with EGR/AIR deleted and I think I may be having some oil burning and possible PCV problems from my knock I am having. Wondering if the catch can may help me. Thanks

If I do an LS6 PCV conversion would I still get enough benefit from having a catch can to warrant purchasing/installing one? Right now my car is throwing a LOT of oil and its all going down the right bank (passenger side) intake runners. When I swapped over to an LS6 intake the passenger side was black and had sludge caked on the runners. The driver side was clean.
