The best rpm range is the range that you want to shift at (which is personal preferance) It all depends....is your primary use going to be at the track? or is it more for street use and cosmetics? Im guessing its track use so the later the better but like i just said- its all up to you.

for a stock cam, I wood look at the GM Specs for the horsepower rating ware it says 305 hp @ XXXX rpm, and then set the light to that because by the time you actually shift it, youll be 300 rpm's higher...

I set the light for 5,500 rpm on my setup. This will give me time to shift prior to hitting the 6,200 rev limiter. Looking at my dyno sheet HP starts a slow decline around 5,000 but TQ is still climbing.
Don't be shocked when you notice there is a 300 rpm or so difference between the shift light and the tach. The tach is ok for gradual acceleration but during WOT it is slow.

I installed mine in the spot for the fog lights.
Set if for just under where you want to shift. if you have the stock rev limiter in set it for 5700 or 5800 depends on how fast you shift. I have mine set @ 6500 and want to shift by 6800.

^^ Hell no only 3 wires. I have mine in the a/c vent like the pics above. I did a small write-up on it, i'll find it.

I know the pics are a bit crappy (cell phone) but, you kinda get the point. If any clear pics are needed, i can get some of better quality
Here is another write-up in the install university site, go to install docs, then go down to Transmission, look for Harlan shift light install.
