should i take off my egr valve? pros and cons?
ok well i was thinking about taking off my egr valve, im sick of all this emissions BS. i can inspect cars so i dont really care lol i know it will hurt my gas mileage but how much? will it effect any other performance? i was thinking it was kind of crappy with all the junk going through the intake stoping it up. so let me know which why i should go and your thoughts on why. thanks

Why not--DETONATION!! The cooling effect egr has on the chamber is in addition to taking up space inside the chamber improving flame front & a dozen or more other factors. The LS1 head is cast with swirl, quench etc all factored in for use with egr. The chances of detonation during light throttle medium/heavy load, ala 6th 75mph about 1700rpm is greatly increased. I would not remove it. Carbon build-up is a factor (small) air velocity inside t/b mount on intake prevents alot of build-up. Removal of intake for cleaning is not that hard anyway.

ok thanks, im getting some detonation as it is cause its so hot out here. so ill pretty much see better performance iwth it on? i took off the AIR and disadvantages to that? i didnt think egr delete was a good idea but i figured i would ask.

Know the hot 92 75% humidity!! Car slowed down.
You shouldn't notice the egr operation, other than no knock & better mpg. Egr is not active at wot. If the cats are gone no. But why bother when air doesn't hurt performance when working. No belt
weight is so little there is not a measurable performance gain when removed.

I removed my EGR when I installed my LS6 intake and I saw no loss in fuel economy. Also I no longer have any knock during cruising and I live it hot *** Houston, TX. I don't know if this is because of the LS6 intake or the removal of the EGR, but so far its been wonderful with out it. Plus it makes it easier to work around the engine bay.

Its real simple...If you pull it off...go get tuning and you will have no problems....If you dont have any tuning...It WILL throw a code...and it will cause Detonation....
hmmm...no knock with tuning...no carbon from exhaust going back into the engine....easier to work on car.....more consistent air/fuel mixture....sounds like a no brainer...

Pros: No exhaust gas comes back into your intake manifold
Have the car tuned if you do it. You will not loose fuel economy, nor will you detonate. I removed mine, not a single problem yet.

If you have ever taken off your throttle body, have at look at the restriction the EGR is. What is the sense of putting the a larger throttle body, larger MAF, lid, Filter...if you are just going to leave a nice restriction in the way of it all? Get rid of it. Leave the detonation problem up to the Knock sensors, because like every one says the EGR does not work at WOT where the restriction that it really is comes into play.

Either remove the whole system or cut the little pipe that enters the intake. Removing the whole thing would be better and like Smoke Ford said, you won't get exhaust(which causes carbon build up)back into your intake.

Re: should i take off my egr valve? pros and cons?
I have always been under the impression that if you are putting something into your combustion chamber that takes the place of air/fuel misture you are giving up power (there was a huge debate amongst the GTP/Buick GS community about water injection). I personally believe EGR is there for emissions and it does hurt power.
However I have seen no data as this pertains to the LSx engines.

Re: should i take off my egr valve? pros and cons?
If the heads ae designed around the egr, then why do later models have no egr? I mean I know why they don't, but why does it still work with basically the same head?

No the cams are diff.
A larger cam (change in '01)with more overlap negated the need for an EGR valve.
So I guess the bigger cam cars lost power NO
The egr does not effect performance.
It does not operate at idle or full throttle.
It is designed to lower combustion temps by inducing inert gas (exhaust) into the chamber.
Engine's do tend to ping at a steady low speed high load cruise, the egr operating range.
It is the added insurance agaist this.
If you have emissions to deal with leave it alone spend your time tweekin' the car elsewhere.
