Default Dots on piston

Where are the dots on the stock piston faces supposed to face in relation to the engine? Just wondering...

They will be a little noisy untill the engine reaches operating temp.....the engine however usually makes a little more power becasue this lessons the side loading on the thrust side of the piston. This was an old speed secret from the 60s and 70s.

Well not me (im not a dumbass or am i)....the guy i bought the used LS1 from did. It was off ebay and i dont think the guy new much about an ls1....he said it was a complete stock ls1 and accessories but had 5.3l truck heads (862), no rockarm pedastals, a few random bolts missing, busted out coolant drain plug/freeze plug, and leaked from one of the head gaskets. Stock...no...Complete....my ***

Anyways i was replacing the head gaskets (he put one on backwards ) and was just looking around and it looks like someone has already messed with the lifters because the trays have two different bolts then i noticed the dots on the pistons and wanted to ask....

I'll never buy a engine from ebay again

Ohhh and right after i got the engine he deletes his ebay name, etc, etc and doesnt return calls.....people these days

Anyways thats the true story behind this. The motor did run great though for the day or so i had it running but i had to change the gaskets because it was leaking from one head and I guess i unraveled the true story of the motor lol

Got all of it for $1500 though and the condition of the motor looks pretty low mileage (he said it had 26k)

Piston orientation matters because the wrist pin is slightly offset. The purpose of the offset is to put a side load on the piston in order to reduce rocking and hence noise when the engine is cold. The wrist pin is offset to one side of center or the other according to the engine's direction of rotation. There is no problem with the connecting rods because stock LSX rods are symmetrical. My guess is that the pistons being backwards will not cause any serious problems.

Just found out the the dumbass put 1,3,5,7 pistons in backwards and the others in correct...is that going to affect it much?

The "dumbass" only did what is essential on many engines. If the crankshaft rod journals are radiused, then one face of the rod big end is chamfered to accomodate the radius. Obviously, in this case, the two rods on each journal must face in opposite directions. The rod journals on the stock LS1 crank are not radiused, the rod bores are not chamfered, and your engine should be ok.
