Default What cam With AFR 205 heads in 346.

I am having trouble understanding why one cam might not be a good choice for a head/cam combo when another is. I am lookin for a large cam that pulls like the devil above 2400 RPM up to 6600. Setup is AFR 205's, 92/92 intake TB, American Racing Long Tubes, and full bolt on's. FM-14, Thunders TR230, and the G5X3 I havr been considering. Please help me out with any info you can. Thanks.

Get ahold of one of the cam gurus, like pat g or predator z, and have them spec you a custom cam.

Custom Cam, Huh. Well I thought going with some race shop would be best, but a custom grind is an option. I would like well over 400 rwhp and 400 f/lbs. And the car is for road racing. Don't want a drag car.

Dude 400 is going to be no problem with the AFR 205. A custom cam would be your best bet, itll be exactly what you want, but Ive seen some people make insane numbers here with AFR and 224-ish cams.

You were correct, and a race shop can and will grind a cam specific to your needs based on a specific criteria.

I pm'ed you with some information.
There are many qualified vendors on here besides myself as well.

To get over 400rwhp you don't need a huge cam but if that is what you really want get in touch with sponsors like Futral Motorsports,Patrick G,Texas Speed, Predator Z....etc

Hell I make over 400rwhp with Futral 228/230 cam on stock heads with a stall.

I guess I would be one of those crazies!
Hell I think Im running that cam, if not its pretty close (see sig). It makes great power with my LS6 intake, 5.3 heads and through a 9 inch, so with the setup the OP is talking about he should make some serious power, maybe even 450 through the 10 bolt?

Hey 99blancoss, what do you mean crazies? every cam thread I see you post up about the wonderous tr224!

What you think you want and what you likely need are two different cams....roadrace applications dont want a cam to "run like the devil upstairs".....thats a dragrace cam that requires flycutting or aftermarket pistons.

Roadrace applications want a nice blend of power....OK bottom....strong midrange, and OK top end. A 228/230 would fit the bill and on a 113 or wider LSA and you could just sneak it in without worrying about the piston notch issues (it will be on the tighter side of P to V clearance though).

Thats my nickels worth of advice....feel free to call or PM me at AFR if you would like to have something ground for you (it would be a custom cam that we dropship from Comp to your door based on our specs that we would send them).

-Tony

PS....And yes our 224/228 cam might be a good choice in tighter tracks with shorter straighaways....it would come off a corner a little harder than the 228 grind I spec'ed above but on a long straight the larger cam would pull a little harder. Ultimately its a compromise and the best course of action is determined by your driving style and application (the type of tracks you generally race on).

Depending on where you're at, you might want to get a hold of Speed inc. I had some AFR 205's installed with my fast 92 combo along with their SI6 cam (.643/.609 111+1 lsa) and came out with 448/402!!! My car is a beast now. Just get a hold of Larry.

I would personally go with the 224/228 which me and my father both run and he has the AFR 205's (none ported) with the 90/90 setup making 420rwhp n/a on a nitrous tune.......
