Default anyone ever install new piston/rod/ring combo with engine still in car?

my buddy has a VERY high horsepower stock shortblock Ls1. he's pretty much to the point where he's gonna grenade his motor. just curious but has anyone here ever dropped a piston/rod/ring set in the block with it still in the car? he has 150k+ and plans to hone the cylinders with a manual hone tool before he drops in the set. i've replaced rod bolts with the motor in car before and dont see any trouble with taking a wooden stick and popping the pistons out the top. i do plan to leave the crank in place and replace the rod bearings while i'm down there. any suggestions?

Cannot, Block needs to be honed with trq plate, bearings need changed, assembly needs balanced and blueprinted.
In brief, block must come out.

i know that's the right way but i was just curious if anyone has done it this way as sort of a quick fix. i have dont it before to a 4G63T Eclipse and it worked well besides an 8% compression loss on that cylinder. who knows we may be looking at an LQ9 drop instead. lol. but just curious of anyone trying this themselves.

Nobody that knows anything about LSX motors is stupid enough to do that. And if they are, well what is there to say except

haha i hear that. i guess it would be a good quick fix but not a dependable one. i'm sure he's still gonna do it though. i'll let ya know how it works out. he's spraying a 250 shot so i'll be sure to post some "carnage" pics later.

I highly doubt he is the least bit concerned about clearances.

Yeah I'm sure it won't last long with a 250 shot on it, not that it likely would anyway.

I did once on an inline 6. The extra few hours to pull it are worth not screwing everything up. I can't imagine wasting the time not to install it right.

I've done ONE piston in the car before, but never a full rebuild without full clean up/hone/deck/clearance check/tolerance check/etc etc etc.

If you plan on doing them all go ahead and save up for the parts, and then another motor. Cause you're gonna need it.
