ticking sound....bad lifter??
Ok the ticking sound is at idle and low rpms, it goes away at the higher rpms however at idle and low rpm's it's not always there. It's louder if I just opened it up and then slowed down or stopped, then you can really hear the sound decently. Could this be a lifter? Never heard the sound until my H/C/I swap a few weeks ago or so.

Well... i dont have an answer for ya, but my car does the same thing. I'm not sure what it is, but I guess I'm lookin for the same answer you are. Really really quiet ticking noise that comes out most in decel and at low rpms. I even pulled all my rockers and pushrods out to make sure that I didnt have valvetrain problems. I'm starting to think it's just normal for ls1's.

I was just about to post the same question. My car does it too. Has done it from when I first bought it new. I have 42000 miles on it now and it never went away. I took it in to two different GM shops and both of them told me it was the injectors making the noise. I don't belive either of them. It sounds more like the lifters have too much clearance or they are loosing their prime at idle. When you speed the engine up it quits. But I also think it might be piston slap. From what I understand, the factory pistons are very short, and the shorter they are the more they can wiggle in the holes, causing more noise from them. My 2000 4.8L GM pickup does the exact same thing. I now have 72000 miles on it. I have not seen anything negative from either one of them doing it. Nor has it gotten worst. I realy am leaning more to the idea that it is just piston slap then anything else. When I change cams I plan on installing adjustable rocker arms. If it is a clearance issue then I should find out at that time. I will let you know.

Thats my thought too. I put alot of miles on my truck and my car with it making this noise and have not seen anything negative from it yet. If it is piston slap, does anyone think this will cause any problems in the future? I don't think it will for several miles, like 150000+. By then I plan to refresh the engine with a 6.0L castiron block anyhow. Pickup and car.

I've got a similar problem. If I let it idle for a while, a loud ticking starts. Once the RPMs come up, and the oil pressure rises, the tick goes away. Let it idle for a few minutes again and the tick will come back. The oil pressure never gets below 40psi. When driving the oil pressure is around 60psi, so I have good pressure all the time. Pretty sure it's a lifter losing pressure. I'll go with a new set of comp lifters when I do the head swap this winter. That should take care of the problem.

The noise is valvetrain noise that is a byproduct of having a non-adjustable valvetrain. It all depends on the tolerances held when manufacturing the cam, lifters, etc... I think its going to be damn near impossible to pinpoint and cure. I had the same noise until I swithced to crane adjustables.

the Gm shops are right its mostly the injectors. When u hear the noise, pop the hood and take the handle off of a broom(wooden) place one end on an injecter and the other on your ear and you will be able to pin point which injector is making the noise. cause i had the same problem, and i tried this i found it to be an injector on the driver side. so i replaced the whole driver side set (4) of injectors and problem cured.
