Default Crank weights 6.0 vs LS1

It's my understanding that the 6.0L cranks are solid while the LS1 cranks are hollow. Has anyone weighed them to find the weight difference? I'm wondering how much the extra rotating mass will effect hp? We have the cranks, but haven't broken the engines down yet.. We will weigh them soon.. Just wondering if someone has already done it.. Thanks

By hollow do you mean that there is no hole in the 6.0L crank for oil passages? I mean I find it quite odd, even though I have never seen a 6.0L or an LS1 crank personally, that a crank can be totally solid. Maybe I am wrong and you meant something different when you said solid.

I think what he means is that the LS1 cranks are gun-drilled through the main journals (approx 3/4" hole), and the truck cranks aren't, and what weight difference this may be, and is it worth any HP.....

Actually, the 5.7L cranks I've seen are only drilled on the main journals.... unless the inside of the cranks are hollow in the rod journals with no visible external indications of this.... but if this is the case, then are the truck cranks also like this?

I weighed a 6.0L crank and an LS1 crank earlier.. The truck crank weighed 52 lbs and the LS1 51 lbs.

was that with or without the timing chain sprocket?

I'm still hoping someone will pipe up with any pros/cons to the minor weight difference....

The other LS1 Funky and I tore down also had a 51 lb. crank in it.

I thought the mains were hollow also


In theory, the 6.0 would be stronger as it is completely solid as opposed to having hollow journals.

So they have the same stroke, journals etc., they are just made a little different like more material here and there. So they are interchangable with any ls1 type motor, Right

there were some differences in the rear hub on the pre 2000 (or was it 2001) truck cranks that makes them not interchangeable because the flexplat/flywheel will be off.... but other than that, you're correct...

The 6.0L crank in on the left. Interesting thing is that they both have the same GM part number cast on them (visible in the pic) of 12552216
