Passing emissions with a cam....
I am in the VERY early stages of finding a cam to buy. I want a car that will be a daily driver. I will take it to the track maybe 4 times a year. But, when I go to the track I want to be in the mid 11's or a little lower. The problem is I want to still be able to pass emissions. Is this going to be possible. I have heard conflicting statements on what makes a cam "emission friendly". I have heard it is duration that counts and I have heard that it is LSA that counts. Could someone clear that up for me as well. Thanks.
I have most bolt-ons and a A4 with a 2800 Yank.

its a little bit of both really...but running mid 11's 4 times a year with an emissions cam will be hard especially with no heads and a small converter...also keep in mind you need at least a bar if im not mistaken once you hit 11.99 or less...i dont know where your starting point is but id assume around 12.6 or so with what your working with now with decent tires...a cam only will probably get you down to 12.1-12.2 but not much more with that converter...so if you dont want to step up with the converter step up and get some better heads and that mild cam.

Should I be able to pass emissions with a 231/231, .595"/.595", 114 LSA? I plan on getting my converter restalled to around 3500 rpm's. I am not sure if the bar is required for a non-sanctioned event. At Rockingham in NC I went to a test and tune night and ran a 12.54 @ 108 mph (good guess by the way) and I didn't need a helmet. I asked the guy what did I have to be doing to need a helmet and he said over 113 mph. There were guys running 116 and 118 and didn't have helmets so I am not sure on the ruling there.

I have never seen a cam that big pass. Thats 1 whole sec.faster than what your going now. I have seen a 2000TA stock heads and cam run 11.9's with a lid headers ,hi flow cats 4400stall and alot of rear suspension mods and custom tunning.I dont think a 3500 will get you there. I say Good longtubes hi flow cats, ported TB, descreaned maf, Lid, ASP pulley,Cutouts, some custom tunning and a lid and the free stuff along with a 4400 stall and the TR224 cam with slicksYou would be in the ball park.Im not a big believer in the Ls6 intake but you need every little bit with your goals so that may help also. A bigger cam would make it cheaper to do but i dont think you will pass. JMO

and if he just has the ODBII test then cam size shouldnt matter, all he has to do is make sure all the emissions codes are turned on and he's not throwing any SES light.

Some have gone larger than a 224/224 sized cam and passed but man, you would have to have everything right. Having the ability to PCM tune yourself would be a great help. But passing with a 232/232 cam? WOW... that would be ....HARD.
