Default Lifter Bleeding Down, Thicker Oil?

I just finished swapping in a LQ4 6.0 into my Datsun Z and took it for a WOT blast and after I let off the throttle I noticed lifter noise from the passenger side head. I pulled over and shut the motor down. A few mins later I started it back up and the noise was still there, but within 5 seconds it faded completely away. When the noise was still there it sounded like it was only one lifter that had collapsed.

I am running a Lunati Voodoo 60511 cam, yellow LS6 springs, and Comp 7.400" pushrods. Everything internally is bone stock.

I have a head swap planned for Spring 2010 so I'll buy LS7 units then and swap them out while the heads are off.

In the meantime, I am using 5w-30 dino oil currently. I am going to do an oil change this weekend and switch to something alittle heavier, suggestions?

Thanks!!

Thicker oil will make it worse.

Get a full quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and add it in with your oil change. The problem should go away.

i had a tick that would come when engine got really hot and warmed up. it would tick and then stop. i switched to a castrol 10w-40 and I almost never hear it now. thicker oil seemed to help my lifters from bleeding down as much.

I wouldn't run a solid cam on a street vehicle...

My engine only did it the one time and haven't had an issue since. I figure it was because I just got the swap completed and some trash must of been floating around.

Here's my experience. I am fortunate enough to have access to an articulating boroscope. I have had the heads off twice. Each time, just prior to installing lifters, I go into the oil gallery and check for dirt with the boroscope. Both times I have found particles in the oil gallery and I am extremely careful when I work about keeping things clean and covered. I take the time required to remove the foreign particles and have never had an issue. If I didn't look, the stuff would have been in there upon first start and I have always wondered how much this contributes to some of the lifter tick issues guys run into after a swap.

I know this sounds crazy....but do it and trust me. Go buy some Rislone, I know snake oil blaah blaah blahh. But if its dirt it should fix it. It certainly helped mine. It sounds alot better after just a few 100 miles.

Mystery oil is ok IMO but i've used both that and Rislone. The Rislone really helps clean the lifters. The mystery oil is too mysterious for me. LMAO

The lifter bled down from possibly a small bit of crud. It cleared up and all is good in the world. That lifter is possibly slightly loose on internal tollerences. If its quiet now run it and see What gives. Once again stay away from those 10-40 oils. If you want multi grade winter blends use a 15-40 and a shot of EOS supplament. Tom
