Default 317 LQ4 or Patriot or PRC

My setup is in my signature, i want to do a new head setup. I can get a set of stock LQ4 317 heads for $110 that i can do work to. Or i could go with Patriot or PRC CNC heads for around 1300 to 1500 bucks. I already have rocker arms, pushrods, and valve springs on my ls1 heads, i think i can reuse the rocker arms and maybe the valve springs and pushrods. Which route would be a better for power for the money?

Obviously TFS, AFR and TEA dominate, but by the choices he listed it sounds like he is wanting to stay on a budget. I haven't used any of the 3, so I can't give a recommendation on personal experience, but I have seen some pretty good power from other people's set ups on Patriot heads.

I think Patriot and PRC would be the best performance wise, but the lq4 heads are only 110 bones. Which i should be able to use my ls1 springs on i would think plus my rockers, so there is a lot of money. The only major cost would be port n polish because valves are pretty cheap. I just didnt know if the 317 ported n polished would be able to flow enough?

What short-block are the heads going on top of? The 317 heads aren't a bad head, particularly once ported and valve jobbed, but they have those large chambers which drop compression down alot, especially on LS1 and other relatively small displacement engines.

Keep in mind, if the low compression is what you're wanting for boost, that we can CNC port your 317 heads to save you some money as compared to purchasing new ported castings. Let us know if we can help

Either one you decide, make sure you do work with them letting them know as much as you can about the engine and your intentions so they can provide you with the best. I do like using factory parts for performance also(big fan of 243 heads). Had I put more thought into mine-I would have gone to a smaller-2.02- intake valve. TSP is closer to you, but also the turn around time may be a month or longer depending on work load. Yes that is cheap for some heads-But as Matt stated on stuff like compression. It will be low. I have seen 243s go as low as 400 complete.

The heads would be goin on a 383 stroker ls1. Im running all motor, no boost. Would these heads lower compression to much?

The 317 will probably kill to much compression for your 383. I'd look towards something like the PRC LS6 heads or better yet a PRC 227 head if $$$ allowed. If your comparing the PRC heads to patriots buy both of them. Let a shop inspect both sets prior to installing them. If your not completely happy with how much better the PRC heads are I'll give you your full money back. I'm 110% sure you won't be returning the PRC parts....

As a note, the piston's dome, dish, valve-relief, etc will be very important in determining which head will set your compression up where it needs to be. Do you have the piston part number handy by chance?

Mahle pistons, their from callies with the stroker kit. I cant find the exact part number, i know they were pretty short though. I see people run LQ9 heads and LQ4 heads are no different i thought, so how would they not work on my setup?
