Installation of a cam
What exactly has to be removed to install a cam shaft? Do you have to re time the engine? I just got a set of kooks lt headers and ls1 edit and I wanted to change the cam while I am installing the headers? About how long does it take to cam the ls1? Would a set of z06 heads make a difference in power. Any advice will be helpful, thanx.

You have to remove the radiator, water pump, power steering pump, crank pulley, timing cover, timing gear on cam and chain, cam retaining plate, rocker arm covers, rocker arms, and pushrods. No need to re time the engine. It will take all weekend to do it. Don't remove the AC condensor, just swing it up and to the passenger side, that way you don't have to recharge the A/C.
Oh and you will probably have to remove the valve springs so you can replace them with some stiffer ones.

I dont think you have to remove the power steering pump, but you do have to remove the oil pump which can be a pain. 4 bolts hold it to the block and two more to a pick-up tube. This is the hardest part to re-install because of the oil ring. If not installed correctly, or perfectly for that matter, you will get low or no oil pressure and have to tear back into the engine to fix it.

You don't have to remove the oil pump unless you are replacing the timing chain. But, most people do upgrade the timing chain as part of a cam install. Just take your time working the pickup tube back on nice and easy, don't try to force it, and you will be OK. Might not be a bad idea to replace the O-ring as well.

first time around give yourself a whole weekend. and it depends on all the **** your installing. i did cam, dual springs, pump, dual chain, pulley, intake the first time out so it took me longer then just a simple cam and spring swap alone would.
